10 Days of Thanksgiving: Day 5

I am thankful for my parents' lake home.

While I LOVE my city lifestyle, I still really, really appreciate getting away from the city and retreating to my parents' lake home on summer weekends.  I think my pulse might actually slow when I arrive at the lake. I love cabin weekends because most weekends I don't drive once I arrive, my wardrobe consists of pajamas/lounging clothes, swimsuits, and sun dresses, and I rarely wear make-up.  Afternoons are spent reading, swimming with my nephews, playing cribbage with my dad, and drinking rhubarb slush (best summer drink ever!).  I always eat like a king, sleep like a baby, and return home relaxed and refreshed.  It is paradise for me.

I am looking forward to heading to the cabin for both Thanksgiving and Christmas.  And once the CFA is behind me, I will definitely spend some winter weekends down there as well as it's so peaceful there during the winter.

I'll close with the most peaceful photo I took last summer.  Just looking at this photo makes me feel a little bit more calm.

Absolutely gorgeous. This is exactly how I feel about the Cape and why I miss it SO much right now. I especially love winter weekends there because in the summer the whole place gets crowded, so even though it's relaxing there is a lot of traffic etc- where as in the winter, anywhere I want to go is an easy drive, we can still walk on the beach and eat at our favorite restaurants etc. I feel immediately calm there as well. I guess it makes sense why people invest in vacation homes :)

Your cabin weekends sound absolutely divine! It must really help you slow down and relax after a busy week. I love that picture, too. So peaceful. :)

God sure knew what he was doing when he created lakes, rivers & seas as they can calm the troubled spirit and renew the soul! I, too, am thankful for this gift!

What Kelly said, quite literally word for word. I'm so excited to be going to the Cape for Thanksgiving, because there's an additional sense of peace and calm that comes during the off-season. Also, you said "down there" when referring to your lake cabin, but I always imagined it was somewhere north from where you live (which, then in my mind, means it'd be "up there" instead).

I am thankful for that too. It is such a peaceful, fun and family time type place. LOVE it out there. It's my happy place! I'm glad you have that too!

I always love hearing about your cabin weekends. It's like I get to relax vicariously. No one in my family has a cabin, but Mark's family sometimes rents cottages for similar kinds of get-aways in Canada. We went to them sometimes when we didn't live so far away.

How gorgeous! I'm a city girl too, but I'd love to have a country house one day where friends and family could gather and get away.

Gorgeous! I feel the same way when I go to my parents (my high school) home on the coast. It's just a slower tempo, the expectations are less, and there's something about being with family that just lessens the burden overall. Definitely can relate!

I think my pulse rate goes up when I get near the cabin...out of excitement since I only get to be there like once/year now days!! ;) I remember when we were kids how excited I'd get when we'd start seeing those Birch trees on 210 that meant we were only minutes from the lake. Weird how certain things stick in your mind!

I so wish we could be spending the Holidays at the lakes this year with everyone. I even have Thanksgiving off -- but flights are just outrageous :(

There's a lakehouse my parents used to go to all the time when I was a kid. It belonged to my aunt's brother and his wife. Well, technically, it had belonged to their dad, and my aunt's brother just kind of moved in there. But many of my childhood summers were spent at their lakehouse swimming, riding the jet ski, and taking pontoon rides. It made me want a lakehouse when I got older, but after years of dealing with mosquitoes, I'm not so sure how I feel about that. Plus, I got stung by a wasp for the first time standing on their dock minding my own business. :-/

I have seen that picture before (I think) and even so I think my pulse just dropped by looking at it. I feel the same way about the sea, only I don't have a house there yet! Someday! Also, I agree with Kelly and Nilsa; the Cape is awesome and I like it waaayyyy better in the winter when I have the place to myself.

I love having a place like this to retreat to! This is how I feel about my godparents' home in Indiana - Ben and I were there last year for less than 24 hours and I swear I have never been more relaxed!

Today I'm thankful for long-distance friends and knitting dates - so much fun!

I wish a had a lake home, or something similar, to go to and escape from real life. It just seems like something out of a book or movie to me, and wish I had some type of similar escape. The closest thing I can come up with is camping up in the mountains, which I love, but doesn't have the same feeling as visiting the same place every year.

Your parents lake home sounds and looks amazing! I would love to have a place like that to escape to on the weekends! Hope I can see it someday!

This sounds like pure bliss, Lisa. Having a (family-owned!) place to retreat to is a wonderful thing!

What beautiful photos. You know, I recently attended a retirement workshop and they were talking about wills. One of the things they said is that the most fights in estates come over the cottage. Everyone wants it, not everyone is able to visit or chip in. I'm glad you are close to this wonderful spot; it appears that your cottage, like mine, is a treasure of the heart.
