Ten on Tuesday

1. Cost aside, if you could go (back) to college for anything besides what you currently “do,” what would you study?

I'd probably get a degree in English. This blog has made me realize how much I enjoy writing! I would love to someday write a book but I think I have a ways to go before I can reach that goal, but a degree in English sure would help!

2. What do you do for a living? Do you love it/hate it?

I work as a Financial Analyst for a large retailer. I started this job in early October and really love what I do - I am challenged every day and am applying concepts I learned in my MBA program. I paid a pretty penny for that program so it's nice to see all those hours of studying paying off!

3. What is your favorite Christmas ornament? If you don’t celebrate Christmas, what is your favorite holiday tradition?

I don't have a specific ornament that I love - in general I love silver & white ornaments.

4. Name something you could literally do without for the rest of your life.

Pizza. I have never liked it - my mom can confirm this if you think that's impossible. I was the kid that got the salad bar when we'd go out for pizza!

5. If you were going to have any kind of “cosmetic procedure,” what would it be?

Hmm... that's tough. I really don't have anything I'd want to cosmetically alter. If I had to choose, I'd probably go for a tummy tuck or something. My stomach has always been my problem area. Even when I was at my thinnest when training for my marathon, I still had a little bit of a tummy.

6. Do you have any “collections”? (comic books, shoes, etc.)

Not really - unless books count, but they probably don't since I don't have any criteria when buying a book...

7. At what age did you get your first cell phone?

21!! How did I ever live that long without a cell phone. Like, oh my God, how did I survive! (said w/ sarcasm) I think it's ridiculous that elementary school children are getting cell phones.

8. What is currently in your purse (or pocket or backpack if you’re a guy)?

The question is - what isn't. Right now it has:
- wallet
- bag of jolly ranchers
- the book "Outlander"
- L'Occitane lotion (best lotion ever!0
- Bath & Body Works hand sanitizer
- cough drops
- mittens
- a hat I recently knitted
- toner I just bought after my facial

I'll just stop there. I often refer to my purse as Mary Poppin's Magic Carpet bag and joke that I could potentially pull a lamp out of it!

When I was young, I remember thinking my mom's purse was so huge and held so much unnecessary stuff. Now I totally get it now, mom!

9. Are you a neat-freak or a slob ? *this applies to house, office, car, etc.

I'm sort of in the middle. I can be really anal about certain things, but I let some things slide. Like my car - there is probably a 1/4" of dust on the dashboard.

10. What kind of parent do you think you will be? If you’re already a parent, what is your style?

That's a tough question to answer. I think I'll raise my kids with a good balance of having a routine, but also letting them 'be a kid'. That is how I was raised and I am so thankful for that. My life wasn't scheduled to the max and most nights I came home and just played in the yard or played piano, etc. I didn't have some place to be every night, which was great. I also was not a spoiled child. We never wanted for anything, but all of our demands and requests were certainly not met - and I am thankful for that!

Bottom line, I want to be there for my kids. Growing up, my parents were never too tired to talk to us or play with us or work on homework. Now that I am working, I am kind of amazed by that! How my parents worked all day and still had all that energy at the end of the way amazes. Oh, and I ate a ridiculously delicious meal every. single. day. No frozen meals, either. I'd like to do that for my kids too!

Your turn - answer some, all, or none!

I didn't have a cellphone 'til about then too!

I started my degree in English - I got two years, but stopped for a number of reasons (financial, RL drama and the big question of what the heck I was going to do with an English degree!) Since then though I've found I love writing too, so I've been drooling slightly over the local college's evening classes in creative writing etc. I started a book YEARS ago, but I'm hoping 2010 will be the year I finally get back to it. There's another new year's resolution to add to the list!

I think I'd be with you on the tummy thing - either that, or a nose job :)

That's funny about your purse and the increasing amount of crap you are carrying. I still keep mine quite minimal...but maybe this will change with age.

Well said about our upbringing! We are so lucky to have had such great parents. So so so lucky.

If I could go back to school (beyond how I already am) just for fun I would do a degree in city planning. It seriously makes my mouth water- but I don't want to work in a mega beaurocracy where there are almost no jobs, so I just read up on it on my own.

Either that or more realistically I would take a course on grammar. I'm terrible with knowing how to use commas and hypens, and I use them all the time. I need a refresher on basic mechanics, pronto.

I didn't have a cell phone until 18when I was in college and even then it just made calls: texting was a thing of the future.

I LOVE L'Occitane products as well. My favorite is their organic olive oil face wash. So great.

Maybe we should find and go to a writer's conference together? Or maybe we should co-author a book =)

I think most bloggers can agree with your #1. We start these little blogs and then we realize, "Hey, I think I really like this. I wish I knew a little more about this 'writing' thing..."

I joined a writing group a few years ago, and they are great if you are trying to write better. You can either take in chapters or short stories and then everyone gives you feedback and suggestions.

True story, last night I was in line behind a man who said he had kids and he was buying 15 packages of assorted mini muffins, brownie bites, etc.; a bunch of soda; 3 cartons of donuts; 20 lunchables- but only the nachos and cheese kind; a bunch of frozen meals (but not even the nutritionally balanced ones with vegetables, like the appetizer ones); chips and salsa.

That's it.

I wanted to vomit just looking at it. I can't imagine a kid growing up in that house. Nutritional food is so important.

I am amazed my mother made dinner every day after working all day long. Because, I sure don't and I don't even have children. My mom and dad go out to eat a LOT more now that we aren't home, but I cannot believe she had dinner for us every night. I am also so thankful that my husband will come home every night and make dinner. Even though I am home first. I, however, stand and talk most of the day and he, sits at a computer. I think that is the difference. I'm exhausted and he just wants to move around. Thankfully, it works for us.. Though, sometimes I am on the ball about meals, I just have to PREPLAN. And I don't like to do that. Only for work. :P

Once again we are twinsies because I can be totally anal about the cleanliness of my apartment, especially my kitchen. But my car is a MESS!!! Dust on the dashboard, crumpled up paper and dirt on the floors. Ugh. I'm soo bad about cleaning my car!

I have an english major, all I really learned was how to read really fast and pull all nighters when writing final papers. Ok so maybe a little more than that. =)

I can totally relate to your Mary Poppins Magic Carpet Bag purse. I carry a huge one and its usually full.

I would totally be an english major as well! When I was little, I would desperately try to think of a job that would allow me to read for a living :P

My problem area is totally the stomach too. I still look like I'm pregnant!!! :(

Your Dad & I were recently visiting about how I had a real cooked meal every day, and sometimes 2 or 3! I don't do that now and your Dad truly misses it! I think he'd be peachy keen if all you kids could morph into tots again and we'd eat like we used to!
