I haven't been feeling well since Saturday night. I thought maybe the stomach issues were from the stress of Saturday night. But then I started getting such terrible headaches. Headaches so bad my teeth and jaw bone hurt. The pressure was so bad, I was almost wishing my very own Dr. McDreamy would come along and drill a hole in my head.
I kept waiting to feel better, but towards the end of the day yesterday, I resigned to the fact that I most likely have a sinus infection and made a doctor's appointment for this morning.
After getting off the phone with the doctor's office, I kind of wanted to just lay my head on my desk, but instead, I just sort of let my head hang to stretch out my neck muscles and at that moment, I saw a mouse run across the floor of my cube.
Ahem. Did you catch that? A mouse ran across the floor of my cube.
I screamed. And not quietly. It was probably reminiscent of the time I screamed when a mouse ran across my room in high school. I screamed so loud that time, my dad thought there was an intruder in the room.
I know it is irrational, but I am petrified of mice and other little creepy crawly creatures. No thanks. I like my work space vermin free. I hope they get this little problem under control soon.
Luckily this all happened at the end of the day, so I was able to leave immediately after the mouse-capade.
I got in my car and realized it would be foolish to go to this running event. Yes, it would be a great way to meet some other local runners, but between my upset stomach and the ridiculous headache, I knew I'd be in no position to be a chatty Kathy.
But it was National Running Day, so gosh darn it, I was getting a run in. So as much as I wanted to crawl into bed, I laced up my shoes and pounded out a quick 3 miles.
When I got home last night, I was in need of some comfort food. Going gluten free has been the best change for me, but I still don't quite have 'go to' comfort foods. My old stand-bys like saltine crackers and chicken noodle soup are off-limits. I've slowly found some replacements over the last year, but they still don't quite do the trick like saltines or chicken noodle soup.
My new comfort foods/drinks are:
- mashed potatoes
- baked potatoes
- plain white rice
- elbow -shaped quinoa pasta
- regular Coke
Last night I had a baked potato and it seemed to hit the spot. What I should really do is make some chicken stock and freeze it - then I can just add some quinoa pasta and make my own chicken noodle soup on the days when I am needing some comfort food!
Here's hoping the doctor prescribes me some strong drugs today so I can be back to my normal self soon.
What are your favorite comfort foods?
Oh yuck!! I'm impressed you still ran, I'm a wimp!
ReplyDeleteI hope you feel better soon!! I think screaming at the sight of the mouse is perfectly acceptable!!
My comfort foods, mac & cheese, anything pasta, chinese food, I tend to eat when I'm upset so pretty much whatever comes across my mind that sounds good.
Mashed potatoes are DEFINITELY my comfort food.
ReplyDeleteSo my internet has been down at home all week which is why I've been so slow at responding (I'm at work procrastinating right now- bad idea). I just wanted to say I'm sorry that Saturday night did not go well, but I'm glad that it did help you remember why you are not with them now.
I know you will find someone, hopefully very soon :) I also hope you feel better!
I'm so impressed you still ran! And oh my gosh about the mouse - I would have had the same reaction! One time a wasp got in our office and I heard it buzzing around and then it dived bombed right into my computer screen - I have never moved so quickly or screamed so loudly!!!
ReplyDeleteMashed potatoes are so yummy! It's morning and I'm kind of craving them now. Anyway, comfort foods? Cinnamon toast/bread & butter/toasted bagel with cream cheese. Dr. Pepper. Homemade chocolate chip cookies.
ReplyDeleteReally hope you feel better soon and that the doc does give you some good meds!
Mashed potatoes are full of win! I really hope you feel better soon - if it helps, I screamed out loud yesterday when a coworker startled me behind the copier. RIGHT outside the boss's office, a way-too-loud-I'm-being-burgled-or-attacked-or-about-to-die SHRIEK. Oops :)
ReplyDeleteBig hugs!!
You poor thing! I hope you get better soon.
ReplyDeleteMy comfort foods are lemon rice soup and cheese grits. This is what my mom and dad would cook for us when we were sick. Just a taste makes me feel better!
Ugh a mouse on top of everything else? Thats not cool. At all. I hope you are feeling better soon.
ReplyDeleteGarlic mashed potatoes are definitely one of my go to comfort foods, as are most pasta dishes, and my mom's chocolate chip cookies.
awww i hope you feel better!! i would have screamed too! as a senior prank there were 25 mice let out in the caferia this year.. i am still afraid to go over there even though i have been assured they were all caught!!!
ReplyDeletemy comfort food for when i am feeling blah down in the dumps is always a fountain pop coke with a snikers bar!
any chocolate will work in a pinch.. ;)
oh and wanted to let you know that i am number 110 in waiting for house rules at my library.. eek.. i have a few calls in to see if some friends have it to borrow but this could be trouble!
ReplyDeleteI hope your doctor prescribes you some good antibiotics for that sinus infection of yours! Those can be AWFUL!! :( Get better soon!
ReplyDeleteGood for you for still pounding out a run despite feeling like a pile.
I am so with you on the fear of mice. I wonder if maybe it's a "learned behavior" I inherited during early childhood from my older sister ;) How frightening! Ick ick ick! Give me spiders, scorpions, whatever - but mice/rats/ anything with fur?! AHHH!
Wish I could've whipped you up some comfort food last night! One of my favorite comfort foods is actually GF - brown rice with a can of stewed tomatoes. Dash a little cumin and pepper in there -- and mmm. I also still resort to macoroni & ketchup. A tried & true childhood live.
Feel better my dear!!
Oh my goodness...if I saw a mouse run across my floor at work I would have screamed too! I hate mice!
ReplyDeleteHope you feel better soon!
So proud of you for still running!
ReplyDeleteMy comfort foods are chocolate chip cookies, Chili or stew and oatmeal!!
I have to agree that Chicken Noodle or Rice soup is my comfort food when I don't feel well! About that mouse - it is just lucky he didn't urninate on the carpet in your cubicle like he did when you screamed in your room that time! Remember? You had to move out of your room for a few weeks and we actually had to replace the carpet to get rid of the smell! But, I would have screamed, too! Take care and I hope you feel better soon!
ReplyDeleteOh my! A mouse is no good! Glad you were able to get out for a short run yesterday! I also hope that the doctors appointment went well and you are feeling better!
ReplyDeletemaybe I missed this but did you choose to go Gluten free or do you have the allergy?
Comfort foods...sliced and baked sweet potato, baked goods of any kind, smoothies, lattes, bread.
ReplyDeleteSinus infections are the absolute worst. I remember flying with one and getting off the plane REALLY disoriented. AWFUL. Hope yours clears up soon.
ReplyDeleteOnce I saw a mouse come out from under my desk in my office and without thinking I picked up a box full of music and squashed it right there. It was a Saturday afternoon and I was trying to catch up on work and no one else was around. When I quit hyperventilating, I had to move the box and put the flat mouse in the garbage. It wasn't until I was on my way home that I realized what I had actually done. And then I was grossed out.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope your sinus infection is better. What a bummer.
Running sick, that's pretty tough! I hope you're well soon. Chicken stock is GREAT to have around - I think freezing some is a smart solution to quick gluten free soup!
ReplyDeletePS - Have you found any rice noodles that you like? The texture is a little more "normal" than quinoa.
I'm sorry to hear you're feeling so awful. Hopefully, you'll start feeling better soon.
ReplyDeleteAs for your question, I'm going to be repeating, but it's probably mashed potatoes and gravy. And maybe lasagna. Do desserts count as comfort food.
I'm sorry you're not feeling well!! :(
ReplyDeleteMy favorite comfort foods are grilled cheese sandwiches (with tomato soup on rainy days) or ice cream. Any kind!
I can't believe you went running when you felt so bad - that's some serious willpower you got there girl!
ReplyDeleteFunnily enough mice don't bother me. I think it's because we had a day in primary school when kids could bring in their pets and two sisters brought their two pet mice in and I held one. Unfortunately, it pee-d on my hand, so I don't like them, but I tend to look at them the same was gerbils. :)
What I can't stand is roaches - they totally freak me out! *shudder*
