A Race I'd Like To Erase

Well, I did the 10 miler... It was a pretty horrible race experience. I jokingly told Becky and her husband that I feel like I left my dignity in DC on that dang race course.

I am not even going to mention my time because it was THAT awful, I can't bear to write it down. I felt nauseated pretty early on and then I got sick twice on the race course - briefly at mile 7 and then again at mile 9.5. It was horrible. Especially when I got sick at 9.5 as there were SO many spectators. Talk about embarrassing.

But I finished. So I am giving myself credit for that because I know that not everyone would keep going and finish a race when they felt so terrible. But I do not give up. I even ran that last 1/2 mile as I just wanted it to be over with so bad. Becky was at the finish line and shouted my name, but I was so in the zone, I did not see or hear her. She got some good shots of me, though - and you can't tell how miserable I am (or that I got sick) since they were side profile shots.

I don't really know what went wrong. My training runs all went pretty well and while I certainly didn't feel super prepared, I was prepared enough that it shouldn't have gone that badly...

So it's over and done with. I had a good cry - while I was on the metro, talking to my brother - classy, right? I was a train wreck, on a train.

Anyways, I need to let to it go and probably delete that run from my Garmin so I don't have to see the stats. There will be other races and I will redeem myself. I am trying to cut myself a break and not be so hard on myself as this spring has been SO incredibly stressful between studying for all of the exams.

I've got another race on the schedule for July - I'll be running a 10k with Nora & her boyfriend, which I am really looking forward to.

Onwards & upwards from here, I guess. I don't think. I mean, I couldn't possibly have a worse race, so the worst is behind me.

Off to our blogger dinner! I hope everyone had a great weekend! Tomorrow we are heading to Mt. Vernon to tour George Washington's estate and then I fly out in the evening!

  1. You definitely have to give yourself a break - you finished 10 miles while feeling crappy this morning, and you're absolutely right, not a lot of people would have done that. You're a rockstar!

Way to go pink shirt! :)

  3. Oh no, sorry that the race didn't go well and that you were sick on the course. I know what it's like to puke after a race and it's not fun! It's still a finish though :)

Hope you enjoy the rest of your time in DC!

  5. Wow, I am so impressed that you finished! I would have been taking a nap on the side of the course after getting sick :( Finishing after that is more impressive than any record breaking time!

  6. You know what? You are a rock star for finishing when you were feeling ill! I'm sorry that the race didn't go the way you had hoped, but you have seriously earned my respect and admiration for finishing under those circumstances!

  7. Don't feel bad, you finished and like you said, not everyone would have pushed to finish! Travelling can really mess with things and can make things really tough. Hope you are feeling better!

  8. DUDE, you VOMITED and still ran 10 MILES!

That makes you awesome 'bad' finishing time or not.

  9. As others have already said, the fact that you kept going is amazing- I'm really not sure I would've.

Don't beat yourself up- like you said, your training runs went well and some days your body is just off. At least you had fun in DC and there will be many more races :)

  10. I can't believe you kept running after being sick. Seriously, if I feel even slight nausea, I don't leave the house. I'm so impressed! Don't beat yourself up, lady.

  11. So sorry to hear that the race didn't go as well. I know I have had a few races I have wanted to erase. Hope you at least enjoyed your time in DC and got to see the pretty cherry blossoms!

  13. Oh, my gosh!! You got sick TWICE on the race?!?! I can't even imagine! You are such a rock star for even finishing when you felt so poorly.

    I still think you're amazing. :)

  16. Ditto x 100 what everyone else said. YOU RAN 10 MILES with a sick stomach and THREE MILES AFTER PUKING.

You're a rockstar. Don't beat yourself up, crappy races happen to the best of us.

I'm a big fan of the hot pink shirt AND the photo that Becky took :)

  17. You are amazing! Finishing 10 miles is something to be proud of, seriously and you did it while not feeling 100%. Delete it from your Garmin and focus on your next race. You are still a rockstar in my book. Love you!

Don't worry about it, and don't let it get you down!

  19. Poor Lisa.
When we get back home, we will have to have a glass of wine and find some humor in the situation!

  20. You need to not even THINK about your pace. First off, you were on a vacation!! I don't know many people that get a 10 mile run/race in on their vacation.

You still looked good in the picture to me, rock star!!

Enjoy the rest of your trip today! :) Hope you are feeling better.

  22. PS - I enjoyed your "train wreck on a train" comment. Having a good cry is sometimes the best remedy to a crappy day.

  23. Visiting from Becky's blog. Sorry to hear you had such a hard race. I'm sure the next one will be much better! Glad you had a great weekend, and hopefully had some wonderful memories from your trip to DC!!

  24. We can't enjoy and appreciate the amazing races if we don't have something for comparison. At least this race was a 10-miler and not a marathon. Plus, with bad races, we learn there is more to running that just time.
