Little Moments - v. 1

And just like that, it’s May! Wow, where did the first 4 months of the year go? Well, I know where they went – they were spent studying, working, and running.

The saying goes that the days are long but the years are short – and that is so true. My days feel long, but 2012 is flying by. Through these months of studying, at times I’ve been guilty of sort of ‘wishing’ away these first 5 months of the year - which is pretty silly. I mean, when you think about it, life is pretty short.

Lately I feel like I am buzzing on a different frequency than usual. I just rush from one thing to the next.  I flip through the pages of my planner, obsessing over my study schedule, questioning whether it's enough. While I’ve maintained a more positive attitude about studying, I sort of gloss over the good things that happen to me each day.

I’ve got 94 hours of studying ahead of me in the month of May, if I follow through with my study plan (which I know I will). I don’t want May to get lost in the shuffle of the various commitments in my life. So in an effort to counteract my tendency to sort of rush through each day, I’ve decided to really focus on identifying one thing each day that makes me happy or makes me smile. I figure that by focusing on the little moments of life, this big thing I am working towards won’t swallow me whole.

To keep me on track, I will post a weekly recap of the little moments each Wednesday during the month of May. And hopefully this little project will help me appreciate the here and now instead of fixating on June 3rd when this studying is all behind me!

Only one day has passed, so this will be a short first recap!

Day 1 - Giggling over the fact that I had misread a CFA concept months ago. I thought there was a hostile takeover defense called "the white squirrel". When taking an assessment last night, I realized it was actually "the white squire." Which makes more sense as a competing defense is the "white knight defense". I got a good laugh out of it. And realize this prob only funny to me.

Are there any little moments from yesterday that stand out for you!

  1. Yay, I'm happy you're doing this! I took April off from my "Everyday Moments" posts because it can really get to be too much! But I'm back at it for May. :)

It's really a fun way to look back on the month and see all the really good things that happened, small as they may be.

  2. You have to watch out for those white squirrels. They're a little tricky.

    Love this intention for May!

  3. This is a great idea! I had my little moments post yesterday for April, after taking March as a little break. I think they're great! Can't wait to see how yours go :)

PS: remember 2 minutes ago when I said WOW 77 hours of studying? YOU'RE GONNA STUDY 94 HOURS? You're awesome. Seriously.

  4. I love this idea! Too often when we reflect on our day, we focus on the bad things we experienced instead of the blessings which touched us! There are usually more blessings than bad events so this is a good practice to hone!

  5. I have a paper daily planner (old school, I know) and I always sit down at the end of the day and write 1-2 fun/nice things that happened that day. It makes a huge difference and I'm able to remember individual days much better, which helps me feel like time isn't flying by quite so quickly. I can't wait to see what else happens to you in May!

  6. I'm glad you are hitting the pause button to take a look around at your life outside of all the studying. Life is incredibly short, and you never know what tomorrow will bring -- so it's so important to not wish time away.

However, I think we are all guilty of doing some at some point in our lives! I've been doing it a lot lately, in fact!

And that "squirrel misread" made me laugh! I'm glad you are having so much fun in your CFA prep ;) ;) (I hope you sensed my heavy sarcasm there)

  7. Haha that's too funny. Good thing you caught onto your mistake!

Hm, a good moment from yesterday was laying in bed, Brian and I were hugging (yes hugging) and Harley came over to see if I was okay. I told him that I was okay and to go lay down and said that as soon as he lays down, he will sigh. He did exactly that. It was just funny because he's protective of me and that I can tell exactly what he is going to do.

  8. It would be more fun if it WERE the white squirrel. You could also have the Polar Bear and the mink. It's funny how our brain scans things sometimes and banks it as one thing so that from then on, we call it that on accident.

It's funny; I do exactly what Ris does; I write each day in my planner a few things I did, both fun and regular things, because sometimes I forget about all of them!

  9. DEFINITELY true... the days are long but the years are short. I can't believe it's May!

Time rushes even faster if you have a busy schedule, so I am not surprised the first four months of this year flew by for you.... I can't imagine going the speed that you've been going for such a long time (although I've done it in the past, it seems "impossible" now - ha!).

I love the idea of posting the "little moments" each Wednesday! Makes you appreciate what's happening in the here and now :)

  10. I got an email from my property manager that my tenant in SC (whom we've already filed eviction papers on) actually paid some rent to stop the eviction process. I was laughing so hard I couldn't tell Kelley about it, she had to read for herself. Silly, little things.

  11. I think this is a great idea! And posting it weekly will be much more manageable to keep track of the moments I'm sure :)

The white squirrel thing is too funny! You just never know the weird names they might have for things like that though so I can totally see why you went with it. lol

  12. I love this so much. It's something we all should be doing! I got to spend the whole weekend with my grandma so it's easy for em to say what made me happy this week. Not sure if you saw this on twitter, but this happened:

My grandma: Do people talk about your eyes a lot?
    Me: What do you mean?
My grandma: Because they're so beautiful.

    Too cute.

  13. You know this post is resonating with me after I wrote my Wave post. Yesterday, I appreciated getting to read a magazine in relative peace at the salon. I don't get many of those moments when I'm home with Gavin, that's for sure!

  14. You do realize I want to find a card with a white squirrel on it for you to wish you luck for exam, your right? I appreciate the fact that you shared that tidbit with me last night as it made me giggle. Big hugs and here's to a positive May for both of us :)

  15. I love this idea and I seriously cracked up when I read this story (I think on fb or twitter yesterday?). Hilarious.

Today I had a lot of good small moments even though it was overall just an eh day. I went swimming with 2 friends who are doing the tri with me and we were all testing out our clothes for sunday. My friend could NOT get her sports bra off after swimming in it, and it took all 3 of us to get it off. That was a good laugh. I also got a nice card from my grandmother today. It's amazing how many great things you can find in a day if you really look. I had to narrow this list down!
