Good morning and happy Wednesday! I hope your week is going well thus far. Mine has been really busy as I am juggling relocation stuff with a busy work week that includes a quick 2 day work trip to Austin. I was hoping to have more downtime since one of my best friends lives there, but my 2 days got so booked up with multiple client meetings, a work dinner, and a presentation.
I'm looking forward to getting out of the office for a couple of days and am going to fit in a breakfast with my friend and her daughter on Thursday morning! It's my friend's birthday on Friday so it will be nice to hand deliver her gift for the first time in years! I used to visit her around this time of year as our birthdays are just days apart, but that hasn't worked in years past due to my stupid CFA study schedule. If it wasn't for that test, I would have definitely spent the weekend with her in Austin (plus the high tomorrow is sub-zero so I could really use some Texas sun right about now).
I have to study on both plane rides to hit my study goal for the week but I am also planning to make what I imagine will be a LONG list of to-do's in preparation for my move. I have never moved more than 4 hours away, so this whole moving 1,000+ miles away is going to be quite the experience for me. I am already starting to feel a little panicky about everything because I keep thinking of things I need to do, like talk to my tenant, start the lease-breaking process, and start purging possessions that I haven't used since I moved into my condo ~2 years ago, among other small things like submitting a change of address form, updating my car insurance policy, etc. Some things will have to wait until I have moved, some can be done before, but I figure if I come up with a master list that I can break into weekly tasks, it will feel less overwhelming - kind of how breaking marathon training in 18 weeks makes it see doable.
Have you ever moved far away? What was most overwhelming for you? I am most overwhelmed by finding an apartment and the logistics of the move, meaning timing the packing of goods and how to handle that time period between when the truck leaves with my possessions/car, and when it arrives in Charlotte... I know it will all work out and at this point I am thinking I will try to stay in Minneapolis as long as possible so I have as few days as possible in Charlotte without my possessions and a car...
What in life cannot be compared to a marathon? haha... at least not what hard thing? :)
ReplyDeleteI have not moved far away, so I can't help with the logistics, but I always find breaking things into small tasks to be useful so I don't get super overwhelmed and stressed. I have always found moving in general to be pretty stressful so I can't even imagine what you are going through. Let me know if I can help with anything :)
"...but I figure if I come up with a master list that I can break into weekly tasks, it will feel less overwhelming - kind of how breaking marathon training in 18 weeks makes it see doable."
ReplyDeleteThat is SO smart! I have not made a big move like this, but I used to work for a moving company so I've helped handle logistics for all of it - you know I'm here if you have questions!
Hope your trip goes well and so glad you'll have some time to squeeze in your friend!!!
I have never had to deal with a move like this so I don't really have any advice but creating a master list is the way to go! I think that'll help you feel less overwhelmed as you start preparing to move.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind moving, but it can get stressful and overwhelming and I'm only talking about small moves to different apartments!
Hope your trip goes well and YAY for being able to spend some time with your friend. That should make the trip a mite more fun! :)
I totally understand how you feel. When I was moving to Austin to Chicago I was SO overwhelmed because I had never moved across the country before. Breaking it into manageable chunks is a good idea, and keep in mind that a lot of things can be done after the fact too. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree with Kelly, I pretty much compare everything to running a marathon now haha.
ReplyDeleteBoth my moves were ~4 hours away.. so I was able to drive a lot of my stuff, which made it way easier. But moving logistics are SO HARD. I really don't understand how it works when your furniture is in transition for several days. I basically had to beg for my stuff to get there same day and I realize how lucky I was that it actually happened. I just tried to not get overwhelmed by it all (made lots of to-do lists) and know that it will be over soon.
Hope your work trip goes well!
Moving is an overwhelming task, especially when it is a great distance! I herold the idea of making lists - have always been a firm list maker! Enjoy your time in TX, but when you arrive home tomorrow night, it will be bitter cold so be prepared, if that's possible! Funny story - when your Dad & I moved to Virginia when he was in the Navy, we packed a uhaul with our meager belongings and headed out without a place to lay our heads! We were young and naive, but did find a place shortly after arriving! I don't even remember that we were concerned about it! But your Dad had just returned from Vietnam and I think we were just glad to be together again!
ReplyDeleteI have moved far away, on more than one occasion. Don't let the mileage freak you out. Most of the things on your moving list will be exactly the same as your 4-hour move ... and some of them will even be the same as your suburbs-to-city move. Also, treat the time when the truck leaves to the time your possessions land in Charlotte as one long business trip - you travel for business all the time, so you can handle being without your belongings for a couple weeks!! Lisa, you can do this! I know it seems ridiculous and overwhelming, but you've got it in you and you'll get it done!
ReplyDeleteThe move from FSJ to Kamloops was about 600 miles / 1,000 km for me but I just remember it being really EXCITING and not stressful. I think that's part of moving when you're 20 hough. haha. I do remember thinking that moving to a new city would be so "glamourous" but the first year down here was HARD being far away from family and not really knowing anyone. However I've obviously since adjusted and LOVE living here and have trouble imagining living anywhere else!
ReplyDeleteAnyways, that was not really helpful with tips for moving but I know that you'll get it all figured out and I hope it's as stress free as possible for you!
yea figuring out what part of town to live in has to be the hardest part. When we moved from SC to Raleigh Kelley dictated what part of town we were going to live in, and it took me a while to figure out why she didn't want to move into the same parts of town that I wanted to move into. Talk to your new officemates so you don't end up in a gang zone.
ReplyDeleteHaha, I agree with Kelly, what cannot be compared to a long distance race?? :)
ReplyDeleteI have moved across the country once, and it IS a hassle. I drove though and I did not take any big things with me. I moved into a furnished apartment and it was fine. There are a LOT of things to think about though. Starting a master list is a very good idea. I know you will handle this well. You are SO organized!
For me the most overwhelming part was finding a place too. Have someone send you an apartment guide and start asking around about neighborhoods and then go from there. I can't wait to hear about what you find!
I've never moved cities, other than when my family moved when I was 7.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see you and I also have your birthday gift! Promise you can sneak in a mimosa before the work day?!
ReplyDeleteyes KC to Miami was a huge move and I think I just looked at it as a crazy adventure. We only had 4 hours to pick a place to live in a city we had never visited, that was NUTS!!!
ReplyDeleteWe have a move coming again soon and this time I want more time to check out the city and figure out where I'd like to be.
Although the conditions of my moves were different I do completely understand how you feel and the overwhelming-ness of it all (i don't think that is a word?). here if you want to vent or if I can help from far away! xo
ReplyDeleteYou are always so impressive with your level of dedication about studying no matter where you are! I should be more like you. :) Hope Austin treats you well!
ReplyDeleteNo help in the moving zone. Live in the same town I always have and for the past 40 years have only moved no farther than three blocks at a time. It is my biggest fear -- not of adjusting to somewhere new. No, the fear of packing!
ReplyDeleteUg. I hate moving. I always realize how much crap I have when I move. For instance, I find shoes that I didn't even know I had. I love how you compare it to marathon training. Seriously, I think if you break it down into weeks, it will be easier. In fact, I think you are moving right around the same time as Boston, so we can "train" together. I think I am on week 9 of 18 right now. Let's make it happen!
ReplyDeleteStressful indeed. I am amazed by your discipline.
ReplyDeleteAs you know, my farthest move was across the Atlantic. Luckily, I didn't really have to deal with moving trucks (planes?) and packing/shipping a whole lot of stuff in advance. I pretty much came with two suitcases and then built up my life from there. Obviously, I have no real experience about moving one's every possessions! ;) But I am sure things will work out - they always do ;)
