For those who have read my France blog, you may recall that I am a bit obsessed with crepes (or gallettes, as they refer to the savory ones in France), as evidence by this post, this post and this post. I haven't had a crepe since Paris as I haven't been able to track down any gluten free ones! But lucky Crispy Crepe does offer gluten free ones.
Since I was there for an actual meal instead of dessert, I started off with a savory Egg & Veggie Cheddar crepe which had caramelized onions, tomatoes, roasted mushrooms, and spinach.
It was very good! It's obviously not a traditional French crepe as you would never see cheddar in a crepe in France, but it was still very good. I especially loved the roasted mushrooms and caramelized onions.
I had intentionally eaten a light lunch as I knew I was going to want to get dessert. They had a lot of great options, but I ended up going with a traditional banana and nutella crepe!
It was SO good. I wish I would have had someone to share it with as it was a lot of food, but hopefully next time I go back, I will have a friend in toe.
I could see myself going to this place for a post-church brunch some Sunday after the CFA is behind me. Others around me had coffee drinks that looked so good, so I am looking forward to trying one of their coffee drinks next time. I will say that eating alone was a little challenging. I eat alone all the time when I am traveling, but it's different to do that when on a trip versus in your every day life. So my fingers are crossed that I make some friends soon so that all my Charlotte adventures don't have to be solo.
Have you ever had a crepe? I discovered them on my first trip to Paris in 2008 and fell in love. I like how they don't make you feel super full since the crepe is light and thin.
Glad to see you're exploring!
ReplyDeleteYum, I love crepea! (my phone just tried to autocorrect that to creeps haha!) my favorite one is very similar to your dessert one but with strawberries also added, so tasty. I got it in Vermont a couple of years ago. When I was in hs I used to go to this French market place (which is now closed sadly) and get strawberry abd chocolate crepes, best!
ReplyDeleteThat looks really good ! I have never had a crepe. I guess I always put them In the same category as waffles and pancakes. But that's a terrible categorization !!! Ha. Looks great!
ReplyDeleteI understand the eating alone thing. I was just talking to Ryan about this last night. This weekend going to Tempe with a group of girls - it was my first time eating at a restaurant in over a month! It is hard. I pray this CfA can get behind you super fast. I have been in your shoes - and it will get better. I love you!
I love crepes, but only have them as a special treat. I like how in France it's a "to go" item and you take it on the road with you as a little triangle. I actually found a good crepe place down the street from my office and I had a really good salmon and goat cheese crepe with dill. It was delicious!
ReplyDeleteThose crepes look great and to find a gluten free eatery is grand! I am sure you will return! I've had crepes a few times, and find them light & delicious! I think we made them at your apartment once for Easter brunch - remember? I know they weren't as good that one looks!
ReplyDeleteThose crepes look out of this world! Yummmm. And, good for you for going alone, despite whatever awkwardness you might have felt. Where Sweets is from in the suburbs is a pretty darn vanilla place to live (true about most Chicago suburbs). But, ironically, they have this little crepe restaurant that we tried a couple years ago - it was pretty good (though, I have no idea how it would measure up to the real deal in France!).
ReplyDeleteConfession: I have never had a crepe. I know. Ridiculous. Seriously. I will have to try one! I think there is a place in STL that has good ones as it's a French inspired bakery/breakfast place.
ReplyDeleteThe photos look great and made my mouth water!
Don't laugh, but the crepes at IHOP are the extent of my experience. They are basically rolled pancakes, pretty dissapointing. I know there are better ones out there.
ReplyDeleteYea :) This makes me happy to read. Sounds like a great lil local joint and that dessert one seriously left me drooling. Hoping you start making some contacts soon, although I'm sure it'll be easier once the CFA is behind you and (hopefully) you can also find some running friends! Sending you a big hug for this week.
ReplyDeleteI, too, fell in love with crepes in Paris. I'm so glad you not only found a spot nearby but a GF one, too! If I ever get to Charlotte, we'll go eat crepes!
ReplyDeleteThere are a few creperies in Austin. A lot of them are food truck crepes!
ReplyDeleteMmm crepes. I also love making dessert crepes as you can have about 30 nutella crepes for a 2-5 dollar batch of batter & jar of nutella.
Last time I wrote about crepes on food blog: http://girleatsworld.curious-notions.net/2013/02/houston-sweet-paris/
That all looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteI have a similar problem with eating solo - I used to do that a lot when I lived in Miami, and got used to it after awhile. No biggie! Enjoy a little "you" time!
Both crepes look delicious! I haven't had one in awhile, but I had a savory crepe for brunch in Boston last summer and have had them when in France and in Canada.
ReplyDeleteThese both look so delicious! I'm not sure the last time I actually had a crepe, but I do love them.
ReplyDeleteI have this memory of eating one with lemon juice and powdered sugar at some point that really sticks with me. Although at this moment if I had one I'd probably have one with just nutella.
And while I don't normally eat dinner alone, I do each lunch alone fairly regularly. I do tend to go to more quick service type places, and always have a book as a bit of an amour. But I guess when I think of eating alone I always think of the SATC episode, when Carrie was so proud of herself for eating alone without a book or any other type of amour.
San send me to check out your blog as I am in Charlotte, too! Hope you'll start to love Charlotte soon!
ReplyDeleteYum!! I got a Groupon to Crispy Crepe and can't wait to try it! Have you checked out Amelie's on NoDa? Nom nom nom and lots of French things! :)
I adore crepes - but mostly the savoury filled ones. I've made them a bunch of times and seriously can't get enough! Mmmmm!
ReplyDeletePancakes have NOTHING on real crepes :)
ReplyDeletethat looks delickous! i have never had a crepe.
ReplyDeleteI had a nutella/banana crepe in Vancouver last weekend and it was amazing but it had NOTHING on the crepe I ate on the streets of Paris. Hmmm, I'm practically salivating just thinking about it!
ReplyDeleteThat is so awesome there is a place so close with GF crepes!
