10 Days of Thanksgiving: Day 4

Today I am thankful for my love of reading which was fostered and developed from a very young age.

Reading had always been such a big part of my life, and I certainly have my parents and grandparents to thank for that.  My parents read to my siblings and I from a young age, and continued that tradition through the years.  I remember my mom reading "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" and being just totally amazed by that book.

Both sets of grandparents definitely played a role in fostering for my love of reading.   They would always ask about what I was reading and books were a common gift.  I remember getting the entire boxed set of the Little House on the Prairie from my Grandma and Grandpa McDougall - a whole set of brand new, never been read books was such a big deal!

My love for reading only seems to grow the older I get.  It's definitely my #1 hobby - and a mostly free one since it's rare for me to buy a book these days since I use the library so much.  Even though reading is a solitary activity, I love how it still brings people together.  It's definitely a frequent topic of conversation among my friends, and when I email my grandma or see my God-mom, who is a retired English teacher, my first question is whether they have read any great books lately.

I hope that I can somehow influence my niece and nephews and instill that love of reading in them.  So far they all seem to really enjoy books which makes this aunt very very happy!

I have wanted this print for years as it's such a fun and whimsical way to display my love of reading.  After the holidays, I think I will be purchasing it!

  2. I love the Reading is Cool print!
I also obviously love reading too. I loved books from a very young age but had some trouble learning to read when I was little (I needed phonics, my teachers were not using that at the time ha). I always loved reading but I didn't always love reading the most high quality books. I'm glad that in my adult age I've been able to expand what I read quite a bit and not have to be confined to "classics" that someone else says are so good and I think are terrible ha ha.

  7. Some people seem to have a greater affinity for reading than others, and you are surely one of them! I love reading and think it is so important for parents to read to their children from early on! When Abby was born, you kids took turns reading to her when she came home from the hospital! She won't remember that, though!

  8. Love this! My love of reading was fostered in the same way; my mom and grandfather were both avid readers and it's something that I know I'll pass on to my kids one day.

As you know I'm a huge reading fan. It's my escape, it's my joy, it's my happy place. I love nothing more than filling up bookshelves with books =) And free books, too!

  10. Yes, yes, yes. Reading is my #1 hobby, too, and one of my favorite ways to unwind. I was a reader from an early age, and I'm happy I have never lost my love for it. (Or got "too busy" to read!)

  12. I feel the exact same way! I remember being little and going over to friends houses and wondering where they kept all their books, since no one's collection came near to ours. Even now I reminisce about certain books I remember my parents reading to me, and sometimes can't believe others don't have similar memories. Definitely something I have to cultivate in our future children so they have similar memories.

  13. hahaha that print is so cute! I love it!

I also LOVE reading. It's definitely something I've done ever since I was young and while I don't read a ton I usually average at least 1 - 2 books a month throughout the year. More if I read a few really good books!

  14. That print is adorable. I'm so thankful for my ability to read and enjoy reading. It's so sad to see kids/adults who can't / won't understand the beauty inside the pages!

  15. I am so thankful for books! Growing up, we did not have television, so I spent a LOT of time with my nose in a book! I remember reading The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I wanted to be a writer after that; I even found a short story I wrote that sounds kind of similar to the Narnia story...

  17. Reading provides a platform for people to share our commonalities and differences. Pretty powerful stuff!
