Workout Wednesday: Date Night Workout

Last Thursday, Phil and I both had a free night so we decided I talked him into doing one of the workouts from the summer shred.  He has heard me talk about the shred workouts a lot this summer and was a bit curious so it didn't take too much convincing to get him on board for a couples workout.

After looking through all of the workouts, I decided on a full body work out that included the following:

Circuit #1
1. 10 Pushups
2. 10 V-Ups
3. 20 Squats
Cardio Blast----> 50 Jumping Jacks Circuit
Repeat

Circuit #2
1. 10 Inch Worms
2. 15 Bicep Curls with a Shoulder Press and Squat
3. 20 Tricep Kickbacks
Cardio Blast----> 50 Mt Climbers Circuit
Repeat

Circuit #3
1. 15 Lateral Raises front and side
2. 15 Lower Leg Lifts
3. 20 Prison Squats (deeper squat)
Cardio Blast----> 15 Squat Thrusts
Repeat

At the end of the workout, we were both sweaty messes and he agreed that workouts ARE indeed difficult.  We did the workout in my condo gym which was pretty quiet that night which was good as we took up quite a bit of room, especially when we did things like inch worms (you basically walk your hands out to a plank position and then walk them back until you are standing up).

As we were working out I thought back on my single days and how I probably would have rolled my eyes if I saw a couple working out together.  Yes, I know I was a downer Debbie at times when I was single.  But now I can see that it's fun to work out as a couple. It's not something I would honestly want to do every day as Phil and I are both independent people who enjoy doing things on our own.  Plus there is no chance of Phil getting up at 4:45 or 5 to workout so we'll never be the 'work out together every day' couple!  But it's nice to do the occasional workout together.

If you are in a relationship, do you enjoy working out with your significant others?  I enjoy running with Phil and could see us doing some shred workouts occasionally.

  1. I think this is awesome! Ben and I don't ever work out together because we do such different stuff, but sometimes we'll go to the gym together, and I like being in the same space as him for that!

  2. I love it!
Eric and I love running together, but that's about all we do together work out wise :)

  3. Wow this sounds like a really good workout! D and I do some of our runs together (like the long weekend runs) but at Track Tuesday he runs with a different group because he's much faster than I am. For gym workouts we hardly ever go together because we have such different styles.

  4. That sounds intense. PS I also tried to do 300 burpies, and only got to about 15, so you are a rock star!

I used to run with Mr. Lovely from time to time but he always felt like he was holding me back (which he wasn't!) and so it was not as fun as it sounds. However, as long as one person is willing to slow down, it can be a lot of fun!

  5. Whew, reading that made me exhausted! Just kidding! Glad you had a "great workout" together!

  6. Christopher and I have never worked out together ... but to be honest, neither of us really works out.

  7. I'm in pain just reading about that workout.

Chris has been so sweet about running with me. It's been a warmup for him before he goes for a real run since he has to go so slow when he's with me. He's really hopeful that one day I'll be able to go for faster runs with him. We'll see... Btw, my goal for this weekend is 1.5 miles. We'll see about that too..

  8. That looks like a really good workout! I makes me super happy that you're the one working out with your S.O. - instead of rolling eyes at other couples working out. :)

Ryan is my definitely favorite running buddy. But we only run together maybe once/week if we're lucky? Our schedules just don't match up. Plus, Ryan, like Phil, is not too keen on getting up at 4:30 to work out.

  9. Cheers to becoming one of those couples you rolled your eyes at! I think it's cute! :)

  10. We occasionally go on walks together ha. In college we'd go to the gym together in the summer. And we'd workout next to each other. ;P

  11. That must be fun to have a workout buddy! I really do not like working out with other people, so I guess I wouldn't care! Haha. I'm a solo exerciser by nature.

  12. I think I'm going to do this one tonight! If I can brave the heat and smoke haha.

Since Eric has started trail running we have started running together maybe one or two times a week? He is still in that new runner stage where he likes to wear headphones while he runs though and also our paces are a bit off so we don't do it too much. But occasionally! Other than that our workouts and workout schedules aren't really the same so we don't really workout together. We have done P90X workouts together in the past too, though. Eric's strength training is wayyy different than mine though as I prefer full body, shred, 20-30 minute style workouts with cardio components whereas Eric does actual hardcore lifting like he'll work out on his back and chest for an hour! And lift really heavy weights!

Even though I don't workout with Eric that much I do spend a lot of time exercising with other people. Either virtually with you, with my many running buddies or at the bootcamp/gym classes I go to! Working out has really turned into more of a social activity than a solitary one for me over the years. Especially running -- I can't even remember the last time I ran alone!

  13. D and I don't necessarily work out "together," but we will work out at the same time or in the same space (as in, we'll go to the track to run, but we run at different paces) and we are often in our home gym at the same time, too. I like having someone to motivate me to get it done (or vice versa as if more often the case).

  14. I used to work out with one of my boyfriends but mostly because he was a gym rat and would spend literally 3-6 hours a DAY in the gym and it was the only way I would see him. Haha. WOMP WOMP.
