Currently: September Edition

And just like that, September is over 2/3 over, and summer will come to an end this week.  Womp womp.  I am not ready for the transition to fall (summer went too fast!), but ready or not, here it comes!  Here's what is currently on my mind.

Reading:  The Hundred Foot Journey which is the book for my October family book club.  To be perfectly honest, it's been a bit dry so far so I hope it picks up soon!  It was made into a movie so I figure it's GOT to have a good story line if they made a movie from it.

Loving:  my new bike!  I am trying to get out for 1-2 rides a week right now while the weather is still nice.  I live in a great area for biking so it's awesome that I can just go out my front door and have access to many different bike trails!  Here are a couple of photos from last weekend's 40ish mile ride along the Gateway Trail!

Most of the trail looked like this.  It was a beautiful place to ride!

We biked to a cute town that is located on the St. Croix River.

Thinking:  a lot about my career and where I want it to go.

Frustrated: by the lack of clarity I have about where I want my career to go.

Feeling:  stressed about the upcoming business trip I am doing as I will be traveling with one of the top-producing sales reps whose opinion really counts in the organization.  I've put a lot of work into the presentation we'll be presenting, I just hope it goes smoothly.

Anticipating: the vacation part of my trip to California!  I can't wait for some girl time in a beautiful city!

Watching:  The Great Food Truck Race on the Food Network.  I love how food trucks have really taken off in the last couple of years.  Minneapolis has a pretty big food truck culture as trucks line one of the streets downtown during the week, and we've had at least 2 food trucks open restaurants due to the success of their truck, which I think is really cool.

Sad:  that the list of people I am praying for seems to grow by the week.  There's lots of sad stuff happening, from the loss of a friend's parent to knowing people who are battling cancer.  Gah, it all just makes me so sad.

Working:  on purging items from my closet that I no longer wear.  I've gotten rid of a lot of stuff in the last couple of months, but further purging needs to be done.  I have a huge stack of clothes in my bedroom that I keep adding to each week.

Grateful: for Phil for many reasons but lately I'm especially thankful for his ability to listen to me talk about work stress (and understand what I am talking about since he also works in the finance industry) and reassure me everything is going to be just fine.

Listening: to very little music these days as I am not in the car much and I don't listen to music while biking to work as I need to be alert and aware of my surroundings.

Wishing: I worked in an industry that offered an alternative schedule like 4 10 hour days.

This is my last blog post for awhile as I won't be blogging while traveling so have a great week everyone - I'll be back in October with a recap of my trip to San Francisco!!

  1. I'm glad you have someone you can talk to about your work situation and who understands it, and gives you positive feedback!
I will pray for your trip to go well, and I am sure you will rock those presentations!
I, too, am saddened by so many sad situations with illness, that it makes me extra thankful for my health!

  2. Ugh I also wish I worked in an industry that offered an alternative schedule like 4 10 hour days. How great that would be. Why don't employers realize that not everyone fits into the 9-5, M-F mold?!

  4. You and I are on the page with a lot of things -- grieving, praying, missing people so much; purging closets and stuff; grateful to have someone at hand who cares and listen.

No matter whether you like the 100 Yard Journey book or not, see the movie. It is totally predictable and so enchanting. Plus you will be salivating for French and Indian food for days to come!

  6. See you SO SOON! I'm glad that the other aspects of your life are in such a good place but I really hope the work stuff sorts itself out soon. So glad you're loving the new bike so much!

  7. Have a great trip! I can't wait to see all of the pictures and here some fun stories of the adventures you're going to find.

I've also been thinking about some career advancement recently since I haven't done any in the last 10+ years. I understand the frustrations you can be dealing with right now and how nice it is to have a supportive Phil to lean on like that, my Kelley has been incredibly strong lately.

Fortunately, the approach is the same thing we do for marathon training. Set a goal, make a plan, execute the plan to achieve the goal. If you ever need to bounce ideas around I'm always close by.

  8. Have a great trip to San Fran! I hope it's an awesome one.

Good luck with the work trip, too. I know how stressful those situations can be.

I'm glad you have Phil, too.

And 4 10s? Yeah, I think that would be pretty awesome. Mine doesn't really allow for that either. The IT world wants everyone on call all the time. Blech.

  9. Oy. It's nice that many parts of your life are going well, but it can be frustrating when the WORK part is confusing and stressful. I hope things get sorted out quickly AND you rock their socks off during your presentation this week. Have a fun time this weekend!

  11. That is so nice to be able to vent to someone who truly understands. And can just listen and sooth your worries

I pray you can figure out the right path in your career! It's so hard. I still don't know what I want to do with my life....and I know soon I need to jump on the "grad school train"......it's tough bc I know I won't be satisfied staying where I'm at.

Have so much fun on your trip! We are currently Waiting to board out plane home. I totally fell in love Northern CA (but not the insane taxes and cost of living.....).

  12. Great update, Lisa. I know that so much of your happiness and feeling fulfilled rode on moving back to Minneapolis. And so, I know it must be so frustrating to still lack professional clarity now that you're back. Seems like you're realizing that your career aspirations change with time and maybe your next move might take you in a completely different direction. I know that's tough to consider given how much time, energy and money you've put into getting where you are today.

  13. I just realized that we did not even get a chance to talk about how your meetings went; I hope they went well!!

I would love it if I could work four ten hour days. Although at one point I worked seven 12 hour days, so I am actually pretty happy to be working a "regular" schedule where I can plan things on the weekends and/or with friends!
