Music, Books, Miles and Looks of May

Well this is certainly belated, but better late than never I suppose!

Music:

Blood Muscle Skin & Bone by Brandi Carlile - I couldn't find a good live performance of this, so the audio from her album will have to do.  This is my new favorite song from her latest album.  I'm so excited to see her live in August!

Books:

I read 6 books in the month of May which seems to be about the "average" for me these days.  I read some heavier books in May so am hoping to check out some lighter, summery reads in June!  My favorite was The Nightingale - if you like historical fiction set during WWII, check it out!

State of Wonder by Ann Patchett - 3 stars
Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl - 4 stars
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah - 5 stars
A Fifty-Year Silence by Miranda Richmond Mouillot - 3 stars
Our Endless Numbered Days by Claire Fuller - 3 stars
The Secrets of Midwives by Sally Hepworth - 3 stars

Miles:

My running mileage was lower in May as I ran 74 miles but that was intentional as I wanted to give my body a bit of a break before marathon training ramps up in June/July.  However, in addition to running 74 miles, I biked 48 and hiked 26!  And I completed a 31 day plank challenge and started going to a triathlon swim class once a week.  So I am happy with all the different ways I stayed active this month!

Looks:

May was sort of a lackluster month for outfits.  It was a really rainy and sometimes cold month so I dressed for warmth much of the month.  My favorite outfit of the month was the dress I wore to the wedding we attended.  It's a dress I bought through a styling service I tried out last month (more on that in a future post).  The dress came from Bloomingdale's and was on sale!  Score!  I think I'll get a lot of use out of it!

  1. I love the dress!! I need to figure out what I'm wearing for an upcoming wedding :)

I am on the wait list for that Kristin Hannah book- I love historical fiction! My favorite recent reads have been The Martian (I even told my students about this book ha ha- not for them to actually read though they were like "can we read it?" um no, lots of swear words haha) and Unbroken. I just read a good very, very light one called The Girl Who Chased the Moon. It got me out of a little reading slump I was in!

  2. Ooh thanks for the book recommendation! Surprisingly, I got some reading done in May as well - God bless e-readers for one-handed reading! I'm hoping to start Girl on a Train soon!

  3. Confession: I glossed over that book by Hannah because I haven't been a fan of her other books (so far) but I will add this to my ever growing, crazy long list of books to read. thanks for the rec!

I love it when a good piece of clothing comes into our lives, especially one you know you'll wear multiple times.

  4. Love the dress! I wish I knew what I was going to wear for Amanda's wedding in less than two weeks! Ugh!
Do you think your Grandma would like Nightingale? She loves historical fiction and doesn't have anything to read on her kindle right now and I usually download them for her. Or any other ideas?
Your activity level looks awesome to me! I just keep walking behind the mower 3 nights a week! :)

  6. I'm on the waitlist for the Nightingale at the library! Can't wait to read it! Though I think I need a break from WWII soon as I recently read Unbroken and now I'm reading All the light we cannot see so I might try to read a couple of different books before the Nightingale comes in at the library.

Love that dress you wore to the wedding!! And you still got in A LOT of activity in May even if you didn't run quite as much!

  8. I love that dress on you! Such a fun pattern!

I'm currently making my way through Kristin Hannah's booklist. I know some of her best books are her most recent ones, so I can't wait to get to them because I've heard so many rave reviews!

  10. Love the dress! I'm looking forward to your post about the styling service. I'm also curious about what a triathlon swimming class is like and I hope you do a post on that too. I've just done my second trail race even though I'm still trying to finish a couch to 5k program (!) so I don't think I'm ready for triathlons yet but I'd love to know more :)

  11. I am so glad that you liked Nightingale! I know you had said you didn't really love Hannah's books that much, and I was worried my recommendation would fall flat. Wasn't it a fun read?

I also did not post my recap until this week. Sometimes life gets in the way! However, it seems like you are keeping up with your workouts really well! I really need to start doing some more strength training -- you keep reminding me of that!
