Ch-ch-changes in My Work Life

Over the last month or so I've alluded to stress and anxiety at work but couldn't exactly say what was causing the stress and anxiety...  but today I can finally share some big news.  Tomorrow will be my last day at my current employer and I will start a new job on July 20th!  I'm really excited about my new job because I'll be reunited with my former boss/mentor (who I actually wrote a 10 Days of Thanksgiving post about this past November), and over the last several years I've met a lot of different people in the group I'll be working with so I feel confident that I'll be happy at this new company and in my new role.

The path to accepting this job and making it public at work has been long and stressful so I am so relieved that I can finally share the news broadly and don't have to keep it a secret!  It's been hard on me to come into work for the last several weeks knowing I am leaving but not being able to say anything so I am beyond relieved that this phase is over.

I don't love the fact that I only worked in my current role for just over 13 months.  Truth be told, I feel a bit of a sense of shame over the fact that I am starting a new job again.  Plus I've already gotten some 'wow, a new job already?' kind of comments.  However, I am trying to remind myself that only I and those closest to me can understand why I made the decision to leave my current role.  In an attempt to combat those feelings of shame, I'm reminding myself often that what others think of me is none of my business and a waste of my energy to focus on or worry about, but it's an uphill battle.  Luckily Phil and my family and friends have all been really supportive and encouraging during the interview/offer acceptance/resignation process.

All that said, I'm very excited to start my new position and I feel confident that it's a place where I can settle in and build my career.  The happiest I've ever been in my career was when I was partnering with the guy I'll be working with at the new company so I know that better times lie ahead!!  I'm thankful that I can take a week off between jobs so I can start my new job feeling relaxed and refreshed!

When is the last time you changed jobs?  Is your current position a role you can see yourself having for a long time?

  1. I am so happy this finally came to fruition! I know you have wanted this job since coming back from Charlotte so I am thrilled it is happening! I know the last month or so has been extremely difficult to say the least, but now it is onward & up!
Yes, it is hard not to let the comments people make hurt you but it truly is the best to ignore them. I am doing a happy dance for you!

  2. Yay!! I'm so glad you're finally able to make the transition and have it be public! That's so excited that you'll be working with a former boss who you really liked to work for. I wish other people would keep comments and opinions like that to themselves. You knew that job wasn't right for you and you did something about it- I think that takes courage and should be respected by your co-workers. I got comments like that when I quit my last job (I had worked there for 2 years but most people I was working with had been there for 10+ years), I know they were partly kidding.. but still. Anyways, so excited for you! Hope you have a great weekend and celebrate a little!

This. That's all the matters. SO excited for you!

  5. You can't overestimate the impact happiness at work has on your life (and the value of a good relationship with your boss). Right choice.

  6. I'm singing a line from a 311 song (remember them?) that's not appropriate to post right now, but it's about the naysayers, because they don't mean a thing. It's your life and you do what is right for you! (Also, send anyone who is saying "wow" to you my way. I have words for them!)

So excited and happy for you!!!!! I have a feeling this is going to be a huge game changer for you and your career :) xo

  8. in technology it's very rare to stay at the same job for more than 2 years. I just hit 2 years at this company so i'm trying to defy the standard, but who knows when something better will come yank me out of here.

  9. I definitely have switched jobs more than I would like. I have only been at one place for more than two years. My second job I was there for about seven months before I was let go, and my second job I was at for about a year and a half (although I worked for the woman who was my boss for 3 months prior and about 8 months after, but as a freelancer). Now I've just been bouncing around part-time jobs, although I'll probably stay at Pier 1 for awhile. I don't love it, but the consistency is helpful. I hate having to learn new systems of doing things.

But BIG congrats to you on the job and gives us even more reason to get together and celebrate! :)

  10. !!!!!!!!!

Congratulations! I've been at my job for two years -- this week is my anniversary -- and plan to stay at least another year.

But, as you know, sometime our best laid plans...

  11. Congratulations!!! :-)

It's a great move, especially since you mentioned before that you weren't comfortable at your job. You never know what happens when you switch jobs but when you feel it isn't the right one then it's totally reasonable to move on. It's great that you get to work with your mentor and friend. This will be so fruitful!

I started my current job a little over three years ago. It was very hard for me when I started, but its challenges definitely helped me grow. I wasn't really job hunting when I left my old job. The job ad just sounded really great and was perfect for me. I remember that I had a hard time quitting, too. My boss actually made it worse by making a stupid comment about it during my last meeting when most of our external partners were present.

  12. Congratulations! I actually start a new job very soon as well. Keeping it on the quiet side as of now but I'm pretty excited for this change since I've been miserable. I'm a little irritated by the attitudes of people when I've talked to them about this change but I know that it is for me and the best thing that I can do for myself right now.

  13. I'm so thankful for you that this is finally official!!! What an answer to many many prayers!!! You are correct, what other people think of you is none of your business, it's one of my favorite sayings!!! I know how hard you worked, and I know that you did everything you could do. The job was a stepping stone home and now you get to step through the next door!

    Yay!!! So excited!!!

  14. Yay! Congratulations, I'm so happy for you! :D

I really don't understand why you would feel shame for leaving your current role when you have this wonderful opportunity to work with your mentor! The working environment has changed so much since my parents days, no such thing as a "job for life". It's more likely to see the same industry or career progression via different employers on a resume rather than the same employer, but even changing careers isn't that unusual anymore.

Phew, moving house, changing job - Enjoy your week off, you deserve it!

  15. Hurray! I am so glad that this is finally happening! So long, feet on the desk guy! Bye bye stinky lunch guy! You are going to do well in your new position and it will be so much nicer to be able to work with your previous boss, who really has been such a great part of your life over the years. Congrats to you and have a great week off!

  16. Congratulations on your new gig! Only you know the ins and outs of the decision to switch things up-- you know ultimately what's right for you, and I admire you for going after what you want and making the switch to something you feel is a better fit!

  17. First, I just want to say a BIG CONGRATULATIONS! I have been hoping and praying a new job would come along for you because I know how unhappy you have been at your current company. Nobody deserves to work at a place where they are miserable. You deserve to love what you do and love the people you do it with! To the naysayers, I'm glad you're not listening to them because what they have to say means NOTHING. The only thing that matters is how you feel about this change, and I think it will be the BEST change you can make. I am SOOOO excited you will be reunited with your former boss! Honestly, Lisa, this news made my whole day!!

I will have been at my current company for 2 years in August and I don't see myself leaving anytime soon. I love the work I do, I love my coworkers, and I really, really love only working a half-day every Friday (ha!).

Anyway, over the moon ecstatic for you and enjoy your week off!

  18. Congratulations Lisa!! And good for you for doing what is best for you; don't worry about those comments like, "another job already." It's great to hear that Phil, and your family and friends are all supportive, and that you're happy :-)

  22. I'm so happy for you! I can't imagine having to keep it quite so long like you did. That is torture.

You are absolutely doing the right thing for you - for your career and for your happiness. there is no reason you should have to spend 40+ hours a week being miserable. There is nothing worthwhile being proved in doing so! So I'm proud and excited for you!

I got similar reactions from many people at my old job when the news came out I was leaving. As I, too, was only in that position for 13 months. But I wasn't happy, my schedule sucked, and I wasn't growing. I'm so happy to be in a position with autonomy where I'm challenged again!

Yay for new beginnings! Soak up this week off! You earned it

  23. Congratulations, Lisa! I'm so very glad you can now be public about all this and move on to something better for you! I know you'll be incredibly happy -- and having a little time to digest it all will be good, too!

  24. I'm so happy for you, I definitely know this was a long time coming. I hope you are feeling refreshed after this week off!

I have been at my current job for 3 years and 6 months! I really really love my job even though as with every job there are some things about it that annoy me. I have considered changing jobs pretty recently but haven't really thought about it for awhile. We are having some MAJOR staff changes in our office over the next few months which could shift our culture and dynamic and potentially make me want to look for another job again, but we shall see!

Can't wait to hear about how great things are going at your new job as I know it will be wonderful working with your mentor again!!

  25. Congrats on new job--I like what you said--it is not your place to worry about what other people think about you. So true--great advice. :-)

  26. Congratulations on your new job! :) I am excited for you.
I don't really understand why people would say something like "a new job already?"... haven't you been with the same company for years now?

I am still at my first job (and it's been 11 years - including internship time) now, although (because of my job woes) have considered looking elsewhere. But I love the work that I do and my (direct) co-workers, so I stuck it out.

  27. I never knew that there will be a time where my husband can no longer look into my eyes and tells me he loves me. I suffered heart break when my husband left home to be with another lady in her apartment without caring for me and our lovely daughter. I had to do 3 shifts every day to pay my bills and also take care of my daughter. Last month, I came across an article online saying how Lord Zakuza as been so helpful to a lots of people in the restoration to their broken love lives. I contacted him through this Email: Lordzakuza7@gmail.com and he told me that he will restore my marriage within 48 hours with his magical powers and I believed in his words that my husband will come back and “wow”, within 48 hours after I contacted Lord Zakuza, my husband came back begging saying he didn’t know what came over him that he’s sorry and promised never to abandon I and our daughter again I am so grateful to him for restoring my marriage... WhatsApp this number +1 (740) 573-9483 for more inquiries if you need his help..
