Virtual Coffee Date: January 2017

Hello and happy Tuesday!  Today is like a Monday for me as I had yesterday off for the MLK holiday. Oh how I love 3-day weekends.  I wish we had them once a month.  I get so much vacation time, though, that I need to do a better job of making a 3-day weekend for myself during months when we don't have any holidays!

2017 has gotten off to a bit of hectic start as I've been so busy between several work trips + wedding planning!  I feel like I'm running around like a chicken with her head cut off while trying to act like a duck.  You know, calm on the surface but paddling like mad underneath.  So I figured today was a good day for a virtual coffee date.  Grab a cup of something warm and settle in!

I'm treating myself to a vanilla latte with coconut milk as I write this post!
If we were having coffee today I'd tell you...

- I am a little burned out on traveling/being away from home. Between going to Spain in late November/early December, 2 work trips to Chicago in December, traveling for Christmas and New Years, and trips to New Jersey and Jackson, MS for work in the first half of January, I'm kind of exhausted!  Luckily, I will be home for a full week this week for the first time since the week before Thanksgiving!  I leave on Sunday for one more work trip this month (which is going to be a crazy week as I'll do meetings with 3 different people over 3 days and stay in 4 different hotels...). At least I'm racking up airline miles to use for our honeymoon!  :)

- I ordered my dress earlier this month so now I have extra motivation to tone-up between now and our wedding in May! Right now I'm doing the Core de Force program through Beach Body and am loving it!  It's all body weight (i.e. no weights required) and I can access the workouts online. It's nice to have workouts I can do without leaving my house or hotel room. Next up I'm planning to do the 21 day fix workouts.  It's nice to have some new workout programs. And in February I'll start to do some personal training sessions with a friend that is a personal trainer.

- Since our lives feel like they've been a little bit consumed with wedding planning/discussions, we decided to go on a little get-away to San Diego in mid-February.  Our plan is to take a break from all wedding talk!  We rented a cute condo in the Mission Beach area so I'm envisioning lots of walks on the beach and lots of grilling as our condo has an outdoor grill.  We can't wait to thaw out, soak in some vitamin D, and do some hiking!  If you've been to San Diego, let me know if you have suggestions for things to do!

- Speaking of travel, we've also decided to go to Maui for our honeymoon!  We are getting married on a Friday and will fly out on Sunday for Maui and spend 8 full days there. I'm really excited as we'll get to relax on the beach and snorkel but also do some hiking and other outdoorsy things. We're hoping to get it booked by the end of this month. So I'm also open to any Maui suggestions!

- This post has been pretty wedding-centric but there are other things occupying my mind and time, like working on my January Happiness Project (organizing) and reading! I've already finished 5 books this month, the best of which was "When Breath Becomes Air." That book deserves an entire post but in case I don't get around to writing one, suffice it to say that it was a heart-breaking, amazing book.

If we were having coffee today, what would you tell me?

  1. San Diego is awesome! I loved the Mission Beach area, we found a great Mexican restaurant there. it's very authentic since they are so close to Tijuana. I can highly recommend:
    Phil's BBQ
    The zoo/balboa park area
the Maritime museum - 3 ships docked in the bay inc one used in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. We used at least half a day for that one. fascinating.
Hotel Del Coranodo & Coranado Brewing Company
    Cabrillo National Monument

We got in a good cheap whale watching trip too, look on groupon for the best deals there.

  2. You have been SO busy! As if wedding planning wasn't busy enough you have to tag on all the work travel too. Yeesh! Glad you have a weekend away in February to look forward to.

Hmmm, if we were having coffee I would probably be talking about Whole 30 I'm sure since when doing whole30 it consumes a lot of my time / energy / mind space. We'd of course talk about your wedding and probably talk a little bit about work. Nothing too exciting happening in my life these days, which I'm 100% ok with as January - February tend to be quieter months for me and I love that!

  3. That will be a nice break to visit San Diego for a little while! It's beautiful out there in February! I can't believe it's almost been a year since my cousin got married in Southern CA! If we were having coffee I would be talking about working out, I'm trying to stay consistent! I'm also excited for what this year holds! Also, I would be asking you to tell me about the planning, I love that you're posting regular updates!!!

  4. Don't you think wedding centric is allowed? I do! You don't have that big a deal happen all the time -- and that's a good thing!

It does sound busy and I'm glad you get a week home and also a little relaxing getaway. Well, good for you -- travel for fun! And glad you found the dress. Serious relief!

    Happy Happy!

  5. I'm with Jeanie - you be as wedding-centric as you want to be! This is such an exciting time in your life! And I can only imagine how much wedding planning is consuming your life. Don't feel as if you need to apologize for that. This blog is about your life and right now, your life involves planning a wedding. :)

A getaway to San Diego sounds perfect for you two! I'm glad you're going to take some time away. <3

  7. You have been super busy! I don't know how you're balancing it all. But you always do seem to handle it all quite gracefully. You need an assistant! lol!

San Diego is such a good destination for a break. It's one of those places you can show up with no plans - especially if you're near the beach - and be guaranteed to have a great time.

If you don't do any of my suggestions - I highly recommend taking the ferry to Coronado island and maybe even renting some beach cruisers. The island is just breath-taking.

And Balboa Park is another great place to just grab a coffee and take in all the different gardens and sites.

You've got some great different workout programs planned to take you to 5.19!! That is awesome! That's cool you have a trainer that you know.

Speaking of 5.19....I got your Save the Date! That is the cutest Save the Date ever!! So fun :)

If we were having coffee, I would vent about how overwhelmed I'm feeling at work. And talk about the upcoming NY trips I have planned, and how excited I am to see Ryan and get out of Tucson for a few days!

  8. Great idea to take a little break from wedding planning. It can be so much work that you don't get to enjoy your engagement! Enjoy your time at home and then enjoy your little getaway.

  9. I really wish we were sharing some coffee!!! We'll maybe squeeze a cup in during my trip to Minneapolis in May!!!!!! I'm so excited I am officially booked for attending your wedding :) Looking forward to it will get me through the tough (for me) winter months!

If we were having coffee today I would talk about how I'm doing with my current eating plan/workout schedule. I know you already know a little about it--but I'd share some more :) I would also tell you about some of the small items I've been checking off my 'to-do' list.

I'd ask you to tell me about some of the best books you've read lately! And I'd want to talk about the wedding :)

Yes...a coffee date with you would be quite nice!!!

  10. Oooh...I love San Diego. The last time I was there I rented a bike and went to point Loma as well as drove up to La Jolla for some beach time and good food. I really do love the Mission beach area as well as the Ocean Beach area, which are both quite relaxing and chill. I think grilling and vitamin D sounds perfect!

I have When Breath Becomes Air on hold at the library, but I am way down on the list. I also have Hillbilly Elegy (I think I am number 140 or something horrible) and the Underground Railroad, which I am looking forward to reading. Michael Lewis' new book sounds really good and I would like to follow it up with Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman (sp?), who is one of the people that Lewis writes about.

If we were having coffee I would probably talk about my recent trip to Portland, the fact that I have poison oak and how excited I am for your wedding!!

  13. Everyone I know seems to be going to Maui lately - it must be the place to be! That's nice that you're going to take a little getaway together to take a break from wedding talk, etc. That will be refreshing for you for sure. It's amazing how much you travel for work - 4 different hotels for one work trip!? Wow!

  14. When we went to Maui we did a sailing sunset cruise (highly recommend a sailing excursion of some sort, the road to Hanna is awesome but be prepared its a full day, and I did feel a bit quesy but the views are worth it! They sell motion bracelets or you can take something/ Seeing the black beaches are cool, the drinks were amazing and we enjoy a luau out dinner/show. We stayed at the Westin (beautiful) and the area was really nice. I am sure you will have a lovely time.
