We had a really nice Christmas with our little family. It was a bitterly, dangerously cold holiday weekend with windchills in the -30s. So we were cooped up for the weekend. We were all very happy to have somewhere to go on Christmas Eve! Paul and I went to mass at 4pm and Phil stayed back with Will - he’s so hard to contain that I knew we’d get more out of mass if he stayed back with daddy! After mass, we picked up daddy and Will and headed to Phil’s cousins for their annual Christmas Eve celebration. My MIL was supposed to come to our house on Saturday and spend the weekend with us but she had a bad cold and wasn’t feeling well enough to be out and about. :( Terrible timing to feel awful!
We go to this gathering every year and have the best time! Phil’s mom is a widow with no living siblings so we are all she has - hence the reason we stay home at Christmas. But the children of Phil’s uncle (who also has passed - all of Phil's dad’s siblings have passed away sadly) always include us in their Christmas Eve celebration. Phil is quite a bit younger than his cousins - all the cousin’s kids are in college or older!! So our young kids are quite a novelty and get a TON of attention as a result - and lots of presents, too. I love the way this party is set up - the hosts have a bunch of snacky things and food in crockpots so people can just graze. And then they have a huge cookie decorating area, which we didn’t partake in this year since we were keeping an eye on the boys. We stayed until 8:15 which is pretty late for Will, but all the toys and attention kept them from getting tired!
The couple that hosts are going to be epic grandparents when their kids hit that stage of life. They are so completely obsessed with our kids. And we have an extra special bond with them as they are Will's Godparents.
Will was up around 6:15 on Christmas Day and Paul slept until 6:45! Not bad all in all. The boys enjoyed donuts for breakfast.
Then it was time to dig into their Santa presents.
The Lego set was Paul’s favorite gift!
That was the extent of presents since they got their nugget play couch from us in early December. Usually they would have 10+ gifts from my MIL to open. I was a little worried the gifts might seem sparse to Paul but he was thrilled! Lesson learned - kids, at least at this age, don’t have high expectations to meet.

Putting one of the lego sets together later that day. I am loving the lego stage!!! |
Phil made his signature dish for lunch - Spanish Tortilla which is a dish he ate a lot of when studying abroad in Spain. We had our big meal at dinner time - ham, mashed potatoes, gravy and asparagus (And yes, that means we have ham and potatoes for both meals!). The boys would only eat the ham, go figure.
But us adults enjoyed a delicious meal. Few things make me feel more like an adult than making gravy! Ha! And yes, I enjoyed a generous amount of gravy since we only eat it a couple of times a year!
We had the 26th off so had one more day at home together. My MIL was feeling better so Phil and Paul went out to see her and I stayed home with Will. The highlight of the day was taking him to Target. We walked down every aisle of the toy department and he had so much fun making dinosaur noises and pointing out trucks and balls and such!
Today Phil and I are both back in the office and the kids are back in daycare. We had a wonderful family weekend but I was admittedly very happy to return to a quiet workplace today!
I was thinking about you in all this cold -- so hard to not be able to go outside when the kids are so small! The Christmas Eve outings so nice, though. And I love that you and Will had a nice stroll through Target. Target is such a wonderful cold-weather refuge! Our weekend was very cozy and my husband is off this week so we are having a very lazy extended holiday.
ReplyDeleteIt was a nice Christmas. Lots of special moments. It was also exhausting - it has been a long month of illness in our house and things continued up until (and including) Christmas, so it took a bit of the fun edge of festivities. BUT...that is life, and I think we're all happy and satisfied, if a bit weary <3
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad the boys had a great time. That Christmas Eve tradition of being with family sounds so fun. I think one of the best feelings as a parent is to see someone else love your child.
LEGO remains the biggest hit in our household and managed to wow my husband and son yet again!
I'm so glad you were able to enjoy time with your family despite the cold. We hunkered down until Christmas Day when we drove to Iowa and back. It was just so cold that it sort of dominated the entire experience!
ReplyDeleteWell, just so you know- the Lego phase can go on forever! My 20-year-old still gets Legos for Christmas. They make very complex ones for older kids and adults.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you Christmas was really nice! And you survived the cold snap and being stuck inside all that time. i had to go back to work on the 26th, which seemed depressing but was actually good for me- otherwise I just mope around being sad Christmas is over. It does feel good to get back to a routine.
Ben and I wrapped our presents to each other in that very same snowman paper. We also went stir crazy stuck inside, and today we went sledding because it is a balmy 19 degrees LOL. How do they like the Nugget? I have been looking at it. Also, I agree with Jenny- Lego lasts forever
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you can spend holidays with Phil's family. It was so cold, no one was venturing out. At least you could get to Mass. We hoped to go to Christmas Eve services but they were canceled due to weather. Ah well...
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely Christmas, even with the bitterly cold weather! I'm glad it was such a good holiday for your family and that you got to see Phil's family for a bit. <3
ReplyDelete(I've been reading on my phone this week in real life but coming back to comment now...)- these photos are so sweet!! The pic of Paul laughing on that man's lap is adorable.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like everything went really well! I mean, despite the cold... (isn't it funny how then we got a warm spell? Literally ALL of our snow has melted, and it was almost 50 the other day! So crazy.)
Yay for Legos! Ethan especially has been big into Legos for years. He still actually requested a couple sets this Christmas. The biggest issue with Legos is storing them when done. As they do bigger/cooler sets, Ethan especially doesn't really want to just take them apart. He always wants to keep them.... But where to put them?! We hung a shelf over his closet door this year and were able to place a bunch of them up there to display, but some are even too big to put there, and obviously there are limits as to how many fit. It's a real problem!! And Legos can be very expensive, so the idea of just throwing them out seems not good either. Neither of my boys just sit and do much free building with Legos anymore, either, so disassembling them and putting them back in the big "bin" is kind of pointless too. Anyway, you can have that issue to look forward to. ;)
So nice you got to spend Christmas with Phil's extended family. I kinda "miss" these family get togethers for the holidays.
ReplyDeleteJon doesn't have any extended family that gets together and we couldn't go to Germany for Christmas.
Jon's mom was supposed to visit us this time, but the Southwest Airlines chaos prevented her from coming up. I live vicariously through all of you who hung out with family over the holidays! Looks like the boys had a blast.
