Weekend Review

We had a great weekend! Hosting Kyria was definitely the highlight! Here is how we filled the time!

On Friday night we laid low (as we typically do). I made pork nachos with leftover carnitas I had made earlier in the week and we watched the Olympics coverage.

She helped Paul make a fortune teller. Do you remember making these as a child?

Saturday was a full day! Kyria decided to join me for my 8 mile training run even though she hasn’t been running (you know, since she is busy biking across the US/Canada!).

2 miles into our 8 mile run with Lake Harriet in the background!

The run went really well and the miles flew by since we chatted the entire time. After we showered we walked up to Starbucks and the grocery store with the boys. The girls got Starbucks drinks, the boys got donuts. Then we hit up the library.

For lunch I made the now-famous chickpea salad. She was a fan! We rested for a bit and then the boys and us headed over to a local beach (Shady Oak Beach) for some swimming. Unfortunately the beaches of the lakes close to us are closed due to the level of e.coli. We have had so much torrential downpour this summer which tends to lead to elevated e.coli levels. But it was fun to check out a new-to-us spot!

Kyria got to witness a toddler meltdown when we left. Good times. For dinner I made chicken tikka masala with cauliflower and peas for dinner. And then we watched more Olympics coverage!

On Sunday I did a Caroline Girvan iron series lower body workout in the morning and then we hit up the farmer’s market and park where we saw a bunch of families from the Spanish Immersion daycare the boys both attended.

In the afternoon we hung around the house for awhile so I did some meal prep (I made the marry me chickpea dish Jenny posted about last week for my lunches for the week and prepped pork enchiladas for dinner tonight). Phil and Kyria went to a self serve bike shop to work on her bike but it was unexpectedly closed! I took the boys to the goose house while they were off on that adventure.

We had grilled brats and corn on the cob for dinner and watched - you guessed it - more Olympics coverage! I will be so sad when the games are over!

We get Kyria for one more night as she will run errands today while we are at work. We have loved hosting her so much! She is the easiest guest to have around. She’s the kind of guest who will ask if she can help and I will actually give her a job which is something I don’t typically do!

How was your weekend? Are you good at taking up offers to help?

  1. My weekend was great! Haha. I really did like all the meals, but especially that chickpea salad, so much that I think I may have licked the bowl?? 😁 Also, swimming in a MN lake was on my life list so I am glad I got to experience it finally!!

I like having a job or a task list and am happy to help, but am also happy to divvy out jobs if people are willing to help. My parents and brother came over to help me paint my baseboards and it was so much easier with four people than it would have been with just me!! Also I often will swap jobs with people, so I don't feel too bad asking for help.

  2. Sounds like a perfect weekend! Glad you guys have had a great time together! Good job planning successful meals as a host! I think I was telling Kyria about this, but I always feel so unsure/anxious when I have to feed guests. I just never know for sure what they like, if they don't eat certain foods, what if it doesn't turn out quite right, etc. haha.

  3. Ha ha! Between Kyria getting a toddler meltdown with you a doggie tantrum with me, she's really experiencing the full range of life here in the Midwest. I'm glad you had fun and that she got in that fun swim in a lake!

  4. this is so lovely! Kyrie seems like such a chill and wise person, I'd love to have her over too! I really want a runner/acdtive friend in real life so we can actually talk and run together!
I am pretty good asking for help because I feel like people like to be helpful and the more mundane/small things we ask them, the more they feel connected to us, like part of life.
I wish we could watch olympics but we don't have live-coverage, just replays. Our weekend was great, catching up with life in preparation for school starts tomorrow.

  5. This weekend sounds...pratically perfect (except the bike shop being closed - boo). And thanks for reminding me about the chickpea salad. I haven't made it in a few months but have some chickpeas in the cupboard.

    We had a nice weekend.

I'm pretty open for asking about/receiving help when it seems relevant or appropriate. I've had to do that over the years with two kids and a husband that travels a lot!

  6. It sounds wonderful. And three cheers to her for her cycling -- is she doing it solo or on the sea-to-sea ride? Pity about the meltdown but everyone gets it -- and it gives us much greater empathy! (After our first one I really had deep appreciation for Kevin and Molly as parents!) I'm so glad you had such a full, fun time. And glad you let Kyria help!

  7. What a lovely weekend! Kyria got to experience the high highs and low lows of life with Lisa, haha. I'm glad you got some time with her!

I'm trying to get better about asking for help. I know I feel good when I can help out someone else when they ask for it, so why not do the same for others and take the burden off me?!

  8. What a fun weekend! I love how Kyria joined you for your run. And, that chickpea salad- we ate it for lunches on our road trip, and my son likes it so much he asked me to make another batch for him before I leave. I hope you like the Marry Me Chickpeas! We also loved that one.
Yes, I will be soooo sad when the Olympics are done! I'm already sad that swimming and gymnastics are over, but of course excited for track and field.
Kyria sounds like an amazing guest. Too bad her travels don't include Florida!

  9. What a fun visit. Ah, of course the tot meltdown was part of the itinerary. It happens to everyone. Bummer about the bike shop being closed. I hope she was able to get her bike checked out before she left. The food sounds delish. Coach and I met another couple out for drinks. You know the saying "getting there is half the fun" - well, we goofed and made arriving an adventure. Coach made progress on the stacks of stuff in the corner of our room (I didn't realize that these stacks were derived from the study closet mess, and I was like - TOO LATE, I CAN FIT NOTHING ELSE IN THERE, SO YOU NEED TO TOSS MOST OF THAT). It was really hot, so of course we enjoyed some pool time too. Bummer about the beach closing. I hope they are able to open again soon.

  11. Making note of the chickpea dishes, which i will probably adapt for white beans, which I tend to prefer to chickpeas. Well, other than in hummus. ;) Also SO SO glad that Kyria was able to stay with you all for more than just a few hours! Love how you have maintained and grown a long-distance friendship for so long. :)
