Story Time

Good Morning and Happy Monday to you all!

It's story time. I've had some news to share with you all for awhile, but I have been hesitant to share it because I have this stupid sense of paranoia and feel that as soon as I share some exciting news a few days will pass and I will have to come back and say - yah, that good news? Never mind, it didn't work out.

So here it is. I met a guy!

We met in the most random way. Before I get into the story, you should know that a) I am kind of afraid of dogs, b) I am not a forward person when it comes to approaching the opposite sex, and c) I NEVER mess up dates/times for commitments.

So let's turn back the clock to three weeks ago. I was supposed to be volunteering for a 5k on a Sunday morning. Or so I thought. Turns out it was on Saturday so I totally missed it. I never mess up my schedule - never. I was so pissed at myself. It was 9 am and I had to be at a friend's house at 11:30, so I decided to go to Caribou for a while and get the paper rather than drive all the way back home just to turn around and drive north to the suburb my friend lives in.

Ok, so I am fuming and so pissed at myself at this point, but I get my water and paper and go sit on the patio of Caribou (local coffee shop). There is a table of 5 people next to me, and one of the guys has a dog. His dog kept coming over and standing by me, basically asking me to pet him. So I kept petting him, and he kept coming back for me, and shockingly - I liked this dog. He didn't scare me. I wasn't intimidated by him. When the dog kept coming over to me, I heard his owner say something like, "I guess my dog wants to hang out by the pretty girl."

I had also heard him say he was single (I was totally eavesdropping on their conversation). So I texted my friend Heidi and told her what was going on and she wrote back and said I had to give him my number. I never do this, but after her urging, I figured - what the heck. What's the worst that can happen? At one point it was just the dog owner and one other person, so I gathered my stuff up and he said - "have a great Sunday" so I was like - ok, self, you can do this.

So I walked over, and said, "I never do this, and I have no idea if you are single (I totally did), but I wanted to give you my number." He stood up, shook my hand, and said he would most definitely call me.

And call me he did - that very same night. Unfortunately our schedules just didn't match up - he was out of town for work, then I was in Chicago, then he was out of town for work, so we had our first date a little over a week ago, and last night I went to a party that he hosted at his house... where I met a group of his friends, his sister and brother-in-law, and his parents.

Yep, I know it sounds like dating on speed.

But you know what - it doesn't feel like we are moving too fast. It feels just right.

He gives me butterflies. He opens my car door for me. He seems to embrace my quirks and finds them endearing. It feels really good to be excited about someone - it's been a really long time since I've met someone that I'm quite smitten with.

Who knows where this will go. But either way - I have learned that you really can meet someone at the least expected moment.

Oh, and remember this post where I said life had come full circle? I think I needed to get to the point where I didn't feel like I 'needed' someone so I could meet someone.

So that's my story for the day.

So tell me, dear readers, how did you meet your significant other? If you are single, would you ever give your number away like I did?

  2. I just did a girlie squeal for you! This is most exciting. I am proud of you for giving him your number, and glad you are happy. I have I the past been the one to initiate things with a boy(I seem to pick clueless ones who can't tell when I am giving them signals).

I met Dave informally in a club when I was 18, and kept contact with him by MSN. I went away to uni, and hadn't seen him for 5 years, whe we arranged to meet up. We clicked straight away(in the romantic sense), and I ended up transferring uni and moing in with him after 2 months. 3 and a half years later and we are very happily married.

I think the speed is only an issue for other people, If you know, you know!

  3. This is such a cute story, it sounds just like a good movie! My boyfriend and I were introduced by some mutual friends. It was just a group going out for Thursday drinks for a while, but then I realized my friends were trying to set us up. I guess they didn't do too bad... I'm still with the guy 3.5 years later.

  4. I am so so so happy for you Lisa!! That is great that things are working out so well! It is so true that your circle needed to be "complete" for all to work out, I believe!

I also think it is so amazing that he opens doors for you, etc. I remember in a past blog post of yours, you mentioned someone about your "dream man" opening doors for you. And ALSO, one of the best traits in a man is one who can love you for your quirks :)

I met Ryan in an Emerging Leaders leading--I was his group leader..and then quit the next day!

  5. Yayy!!! So exciting and I LOVE that you just gave him your number, thats so great- I don't know if I could ever do that but I think its awesome that you did.

I met my fiance at a bar- and it was very random because we were out for a friends b-day, that was supposed to be a week earlier but a snow storm hit so we went later. There were a lot of what ifs involved so I think it was meant to be haha.

  8. Oh, Lisa! I'm so excited for you =) Meeting people like that is exhilirating and fun. I hope that it continues to go well and that we hear more about him.

One of the most daring things I did in college to meet a guy? He was a bouncer at a bar that I frequented, I'd had enough beer so I went up to him and said "Hi, my name is Nora and I think you're hot." We went out for a few weeks after that!

  9. How exciting!!! And what a great story! He sounds really sweet and when I was reading the part bout you giving him your number I was like "yes!" :) Definitely keep us posted!

The hubby and I have known each other since first grade. Long story short we have been friends since then, dated for about nine months in high school (and broke up for a reason I'm sure was significant at the time), and then reconnected several years later. (He later told me he had continued to carry a torch for me and that no other girl he dated after me measured up. :)

  11. This is so cute!!!! I agree with the commenter above, it gave me goosebumps! I think I am a lot like you, it would take a lot of urging from a friend to give a guy my number. I'm so glad you did!! :) Have fun!!! Can't wait to hear more!

  12. I had a smile PLASTERED to my face the entire time I was reading this!!

SO excited for you, and that is such an awesome/cute way to meet someone!!

I would like to think that I would be that daring with a guy because I'm ALWAYS on my single friends cases about being more "out there" but I honestly don't know if I would be as outgoing as I claim I would be. Haha!

Can't wait to hear more about this story and how it turns out :D

  13. I'm glad you did that. I am getting very irritated with my single friends and their complete lack of TRYING to not be single and yet not be happy they are single. I met my hub when I invited myself out on his boat for the 4th of July. Actually our mutual friend invited us there and I had no idea we were crashing.. but yet somehow it worked because we have been together for 6 years and married for 2...

  14. I am so excited for you Lisa! You have so many fun and exciting things going on right now. You should be really proud of yourself! (new job, marathon training, giving a boy your number!) I am very impressed!!!

Jason and I met while working together at a bank. I had just graduated from college and he was working there part time while finishing college. We started hanging out and he asked me out. I turned him down at first because I didn't want to date a co-worker. Well, eventually I came around and here we are 5 years later...been married 3 years and have a beautiful little boy. Life doesn't get much better.

Here's to taking chances!! Best of luck!

  17. I'm doing such a happy dance for you! How brave of you to give him your number. I guess when the moments right that bravery strikes.

  18. Very exciting!

Like they say, when it's right, it's right.

My husband is everything I always said I would never be interested in: a guy from ND (no offense) and a cop. If we would have met years ago, I would have NEVER been interested in him: he had long hair, was into grunge, smoked, and thought he was way tougher than he really is/was. (Thankfully, he's none of those things now).

I also said I was never going to marry again. Never say never. It bites you in the butt, just out of spite.

My husband proposed 6 weeks after our first date; but told his mother the day after our first date that he was going to marry me! (He didn't tell me that until AFTER we were already married; otherwise, I would have had a serious issue with his speediness!)

Anyway; back to you-- this is very exciting and I hope for you nothing but happiness. Afterall, you dealt with dogs AND giving away your number- you more than deserve this. Have fun!
