I had my first dairy free flop last weekend. I attempted to make Vegan Alfredo - a recipe by Angela of Oh She Glows. I don't blame the recipe for the flop, though - I blame my personal taste preferences. The taste of the tahini just overwhelmed all of the other ingredients... I sort of felt like I was eating peanut butter flavored noodles... and I am not a peanut sauce person so this was not a good thing!
So not a success, but I have had plenty of flops when baking/cooking. Plenty. It's bound to happen from time to time! Luckily her directions said to only put sauce on the serving you plan on eating since it doesn't keep well so I didn't waste much pasta!
This recipe took very little time to make, so when it didn't turn out, I really wasn't too upset. I sort of shrugged my shoulders and moved on. That's progress for me. I have been known to maybe call my mom in tears when something doesn't turn out in the kitchen... As if she can fix it from 200+ miles away!
This weekend, I am going to try another recipe of Angela's - I'll be making her mushroom risotto. I like all the ingredients, so I think this one will be a hit with my taste buds!
Do you handle it well when recipes flop?
Not particularly! I sort of want everything to be perfect straight away. If things turn out ok, then I can at least attempt to improve them, but if they are terrible I just don't try again.

ReplyDeletenot pregnant? i handle flops well.. pregnant? i get pissy because i wanted THAT and now it tastes gross or i am too tired/overwhelmed to fix it and if my husband hates it too? then i get upset. irrational and i cant wait to be done with the hormone crazy ha.

I love risotto, too! It sounds delicious! We all have flops, but it's the worst when you have prepared if for company! At least it was only for yourself.
ReplyDeleteWell, you can't go wrong with risotto! I recommend splashing some sherry in, Mushrooms taste so good with sherry.
ReplyDeleteUm, well, I kind of handle it ok... although I've been known to throw it all away before. Or to try to salvage it somehow, which works more often than one would think. But generally speaking I get annoyed. Then try to figure out how to fix it for the future.

Definitely not. Especially if it's a recipe that took a lot of money (for ingredients) or time. It's such a bummer! And I love food, so I hate being disappointed by food. :( Makes me sad.
ReplyDeleteThe mushroom risotto is SO SO SO good. I'm going to make it again for my mom when she's here in April. It does take awhile though - maybe an hour or so all together?

I have no patience for recipe flops. This is mainly because I really don't enjoy cooking so I get mad when I waste time on something that sucks haha.

When things flop, sometimes I'm frustrated or upset bc I took so long making it and others I know how much I altered the recipe so I'm not too surprised. I looove peanut sauce so I would have probably loved the recipe. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm starting to handle recipe flops better, once it's all said and done, but I still get panicky in the moment. (See me making waffles last weekend when it overflowed).

ReplyDeleteOh yes, I've made some flops before. I am gluten intolerant and MAN sometimes things just don't work out. But it makes the successes all the better.
ReplyDeleteAll depends. If it's just me eating it, or if the ingredients and time element weren't over the top, then I don't much care. But if I'm serving it or really breaking the bank on ingredients or spending tons of time ... well, that's an entirely different story!

ReplyDeleteHow do I deal with flops? I get pretty disgusted with myself. Like, tonight, I forgot to put the lemon juice in the spanokopita - and it made a difference, and Nor and I both noticed it. Everyone else was cool with it, but I thought "drat!"
I don't have a lot of cooking specials in my queue so I can't afford to screw them up....and yet I have the occasional problem and end up standing there in amazement...Oh, and the time I made a key lime pie and used evaporated milk instead of condensed milk - ugh.
And on we go, trying to win their hearts and their stomachs!
BTW, there's a new frozen yogurt place in our neighborhood that has several gluten free flavors, too. All natural, all local, all good. We'll be taking you there!
