First Family Visitors!

Happy Friday, everyone!  Woo hip!  It's the weekend!  Mine is jam-packed full of all kinds of fun stuff, but one thing I am very excited about is the fact that some of my family will see my new home for the first time!

On Saturday my brother, his wife, and their 2 boys will be coming over.  We are going to walk the 2 blocks to the farmer's market, check out my neighborhood, and then grill up some lunch.  I have been on the receiving end of COUNTLESS meals at my brother's so I am very very excited to reciprocate - albeit a bit nervous that I may not come close to living up to the meals they make for me!  I may have my brother help me man the grill as I am still learning how to grill...

The plan is to make hot dogs for the kids and brats for the adult which I will likely purchase at this local polish deli that is walking distance from my condo!  And then for sides, I'll probably do rosemary baby potatoes and probably green beans, both of which I purchased at the farmer's market this week.  Dessert will probably be grilled pineapple for the adults and popsicles for kids (and heck, probably a popsicle for me as well).

I am super excited to show them my new home, which I love and adore.  Plus the boys have not come to see where I live since like 2007 so they are always quite confused about what I mean when I tell them I have to go 'home' when I leave their house.  Now they will get what I mean by 'home' and I hope they will be frequent visitors!

What do you have on tap this weekend?  If you had family coming over for a bbq lunch, what would you make?  I am doing a simple menu as I have run club on Sat am so won't have a ton of prep time.  I definitely want to do something a bit more refined next time they come over!

  2. We are not refined barbequers. We are 'as many kids of meat as we can afford, crisps and dips (homemade obv) and a few salady bits' barbequers. and we have hot banana and marshmallows for pud.

  3. That's the best part of BBQs, you don't have to really be refined, you can just throw some stuff on the grill :) Maybe for dessert you can have smores, the kids would love that!

Yay for your first family visitors, have fun!

  5. I hope you have a fabulous time with your family!

My in-laws are coming for the night tonight and then they are off camping. Other than that, we have nothing else planned. I'm quite excited!

  6. BBQs are the best :) Jas and I love cutting up red potatoes/onions--putting them in some foil with a little olive oil, salt, pepper on top, and baking them on the grill! Soooo delish :)

Enjoy showing your place off to your fam! Such excitement!!!!

As for my weekend---I'll be finishing up my honeymoon at "Niagar on the Lake"---which looks like a super cute community!!! Can't wait to catch up with you when I'm back in the states!

  7. Only thing I've got on tap for this weekend is the Big Deuce and some Ironman training.

I would go with a cold cut spread and let people make their own sandwiches. I'm lazy like that. and now i'm craving sandwiches.

  8. We are all about some grilling lately. (cause it's TOO HOT to cook inside)

My favorite is marinated grilled veggies. They're so good I have to buy triple the amount because we inhale them.

  9. We are hoping to hit up the Farmer's Market and do some grilling this weekend, too! I have my running group tomorrow morning and I'm going to try to convince myself to do some work on copyediting and finishing up endnotes.

I hope you have a great time with your family! I'm sure the meal you prepare will be delicious!

  10. Your weekend sounds great! Family time is always fun!

We like to make grilled portobello mushrooms and corn on the cob -- if you just open the husk a little, rub some olive oil and spices (if you want) on it, then close the husk back up and grill it IN the husk, it comes out perfectly.

Enjoy your run! I think after that you will deserve a Popsicle!

  13. I would make ribs, Mediterranean potato salad, corn on the cob and bruschetta. I would have make-your-own sundaes for dessert with homemade hot fudge and lots of fun toppings!!

I love family dinners! I am sure that everyone will love what you make.

  16. I didn't get past "walk 2 blocks to the farmer's market". How lucky are you??

Nothing better than a bbq filled with food, fun and family.

  17. OK, first, should I get MAJOR PETTIGREW to read - you recommend?

Second, how cool to have your first family BBQ chez toi!!!! Grilled pineapple? why didn't I think of that today? I LOVE pineapple and have a fresh chunk in the fridge...and we grilled today (did the beer can chicken on the grill which sounds very, well, not posh, BUT it tastes fantastic.)

Walking to your shops - what a luxury. So urban life is good. Do we get to see pictures of your new place? Maybe you put some in prior blogs but I am WAY behind in reading, I confess.

I'm sure the dinner was a hit and look forward to reading how that went as well - and to your nephews' reactions to your new place!
