My Newest Addition

Happy Friday!  I hope none of you thought that blog title was in reference to a pet...  I think you all know me well enough to know that I am NOT an animal person (no offense to all you animal lovers out there...  I just prefer children and books to pets).

The new addition I am referring to is the piano I bought...

First off, let me say that it is not as expensive as it looks...  I was paranoid about posting a photo of this for fear that people would get the idea that I am well off - which is so not the case.  I don't know why I am so paranoid about this as the piano costs a fraction of the cost of a vehicle, and people go out and buy vehicles every weekend without feeling sheepish about it...  And I will have this piano for the rest of my life, so it's really more of an investment!

All that aside, I am incredibly happy to have a piano in my home.  I starting taking piano lessons at a young age and then in high school I had 10 students of my own (which was a pretty cool job!).  Playing piano has always been a big part of my life, but I have never had the space for a piano.  Until now!

The piano was delivered last week and I played my heart out the first night it was in my home.  I am a little rusty as I have not played consistently for the last 8 years, but I know with time, I will get back to where I was before.  I am thrilled to have a piano in my home around the holidays - there is nothing better than playing Christmas carols in my opinion!  And then when CFA studying commences, this will be the best stress reliever out there!

Do you play the piano or any instrument?  Would you ever purchase a piano for your home?  I always thought I would purchase a piano when I had children but figured - why wait?  I might as well enjoy it now!

  1. I love your new piano! That is so cool that you gave lessons as a teenager. I bet you had fun doing that! I don't think you should feel bad for showing off something you love!

I played the clarinet and the trombone, but quit band to play sports. I just didn't feel like I had time for both! We always had a piano around growing up and so I can play a couple of one finger ditties, but nothing grand!

  2. Ooh it's beautiful! And I agree, it will be a great stress reliever! I have a friend who was a music performance major in college and she has a piano (that she found for free on craigslist!) that she sometimes gives lessons on. I'm so jealous of you musical ladies!

  4. I am also actively an anti-pet person. So of course I have 2 kids and 6 animals in my house. Yea, you see who went for the win on that one. I haven't given in to a dog though, holding strong there.

That's a beautiful piano! I took lessons as a kid and played through college when I was still a music major. We don't have a piano now, but our last house did and I used to play for the kids some. I also used to play guitar and sing a lot.

check www.slowrunnermusic.com, my brother Michael actually has been a full time professional musician for years now. You'd like his stuff.

  5. How awesome! I totally didn't know you played piano before. It's beautiful. I've never played any type of instrument, although my best friend in middle school played clarinet and I always wanted to learn!

  6. A home without a piano is just not complete! Of course, you should utilize it so that may not be a top end priority if music isn't in your blood. I think music - well at least some music - is the voice of angels!

  7. I played piano and taught lessons for years and had to sell my piano when I moved to a smaller apartment. I keep prowling Craigslist for free pianos that I could pay to move and tune. I love it! So happy for you. There really is no better stress reliever.

  8. Love your new piano. Kinda jealous you now have one. I played piano for 15 years and I miss it horribly. One day, we will have the space for a piano (and neighbors who won't hear us when we practice)!

PS - I never would've guessed you don't like pets. You seemed totally fine with SoMi! Fooled me!

Maybe we can facetime so you can play me a holiday song :)

  10. Hehe I am giggling about your shuddering at the thought of a dog park. I definitely knew you didn't mean a pet with that title ;)

I LOVE your piano! Wish you'd had it when I visited so you could have played it for me :) I think it was a very, very good/smart purchase and it will offer you hours and hours of joy for a long time!

  11. I love your new piano. I also took lessons and used to teach it (until I moved to Europe). My piano is still at my dad's but I'm trying to sell it so I can buy an electronic piano (not a keyboard!!) for the apartment so I don't disturb the neighbours :)

  12. #1- I am in total agreement about pets, children and books- love the second too and I'm kind of eh about the first, I like dogs but I am not willing to put in the work required :)

#2- Your piano looks awesome! I attempted to learn the piano when I was younger but sadly I have no musical talent (or motivation to overcome that) whatsoever. My grandfather was a great piano player though so it reminds me of him. Last summer I tutored a little boy who's older sister was a fantastic piano player. She played while we were working and at first I thought it was a CD. It was so relaxing. Maybe you can record yourself playing and send it to us :) (especially Christmas songs!)

  15. Congrats! :) I've played flute for like 16 years and teaching lessons was one of my favorite jobs! I am SO rusty though, I haven't played consistently in a long time. I think I need to start taking lessons again myself, just to have the accountability now that I'm not in an ensemble anymore. I play a little piano (entirely self-taught, but since it's a C instrument it's easier for me). I definitely want to get better and can't wait until I have a place with the space for a piano. We always had one growing up and I loved listening to both of my grandmothers and my mom play, especially at Christmas!

  16. My great grandma was a pianist for silent movies, and she had this gorgeous, black with red detailing gothic style piano. She passed it on to my grandma, who passed it on to my dad. My dad recently gave the piano to my husband and I, and it has been living at my inlaws until we move to a different house (one day), because it won't fit in through our cramped entrance way. I cannot wait to have it in my possession and then I want to take lessons.

  17. So pretty! And that seat looks comfy too - all the pianos I've ever sat at have the hard bench which makes me not want to be there long.

I don't play the piano but I've always wanted to learn - when I come visit you someday I'm going to force you to sit and play for me for hours! (Or at least one hour!)

  18. Love the piano!!! WOOHOO :) Your purchase inspired me to get back into playing the piano Jas and I inherited from Jane!

  19. It is beautiful!! And you shouldn't feel self conscious or worried about what people will think of your means after purchasing it. It's beautiful, you found a great deal, you bought smart, and you worked for this! It's been something you've wanted your whole life!!! I'm so excited for you :)

  20. Congrats! a piano, while a formidable piece of furniture to push around the room when you're re-arranging is a truly great friend who celebrates any and every mood you wish to play upon it! Quite a thrill to own one. And next time you're here in STL, you must sit down and play for us - there's one in our den tho' not nearly so compelling looking as yours! "Michael" got it for me for one of our early anniversaries and while it's old and often out of tune, it's nearly impossible to part with, 'specially since Nor learned on it, too!

Looking forward to hearing you play AND I have several books of duets!

  21. It's a fantastic investment and a beautiful one, too. I can hear the carols now.

  22. I wish I would have learned how to play piano-- I'm so jealous of those that can play. Playing music is a stress reliever; the best one, I think. My favorite instrument to play was the piccolo, but that's because I was in the orchestra pit during college for a production of "South Pacific" and I adored the piccolo parts! (Who knew I could tune a piccolo and keep it in tune?)

  23. Playing piano as a study break will be an excellent stress reliever. I bought my piano when I was 30. It has been with me 30 years!!!!! I have never regretted the purchase. Not once!

  24. I think it's a great purchase and one you'll get use out of for years to come! You totally deserve it. I think you should record yourself playing a Christmas carol or something fun and post it sometime. :)
