Happy Tuesday, everyone. Yesterday was my first full day back at work and it went well! Woo hoo!
In April, the lovely San of The In Between is Mine nominated me for the Liebster Award. Liebster is German for "the loveliest" or "most favorite." Thanks for the award, San! The way it works is that I answer the 11 questions San came up with, write 11 of my own, and then tag anywhere from 2-11 people to answer the questions I came up with. Here are my answers to her questions:
1. What is your favorite beauty product?
My favorite beauty product is the Arbonne RE9 Advanced line of skincare products. It's pricier than what you would buy at a drugstore or Target, but worth the money spent in my opinion as my skin looks and feels so great since I started using this skincare line years ago. And to be clear, I am not at all compensated to recommend this product, nor do I sell it! But my friend Becky does, so reach out to her if you want to try a sample!
2. If you could pick any place/city to move to for a year, where would you want to go?
Domestically, I'd pick San Francisco or New York. There's just so much to do and see in these cities. San Francisco is close to so many great parks and trail systems, and New York obviously has tons to offer but is also close to a bunch of states in the northeast that I've never visit, so I'd have lots of exploring to do in either city. Phil would pick San Francisco over New York (sorry Alli!). Internationally, I would pick Paris!!
3. What is one thing you like best about your home?
There are a lot of things I love about Phil's house (I guess I should be referring to it as "our" house now!!), but the top of the list is the location as he lives in a cute neighborhood in south Minneapolis. We both have agreed that we prefer to not live in the suburbs (no offense to those who have built their life there - it's just not the right fit for us) as we value being close to the city in a walkable neighborhood. I love that I can walk to a grocery store, Starbucks, a drug store, a Catholic church, and the library. Additionally, it's a short 20 minute bus ride away from work, and it's very close to a running/biking trail system that follows a creek in one direction and the chain of lakes in the other direction.
4. What are you favorite pair of shoes?
Gosh, I am so not a shoe person. Especially since getting diagnosed with RA as I have to be very kind to my feet. If I had to pick a favorite pair, I'd say a pair of black Cole Haan flats with Nike air technology. They were kind of expensive but worth the money as I've had them for 2.5 years and they still look and feel great!
5. What is your favorite travel destination?
Paris. That city has just totally captured my heart.
6. If you could have one do-over, what would it be?
I wish I had never bought my suburban condo in 2005. Nearly 11 years later, it is still worth less than what I paid for it. I'm hoping that I'll be able to sell it and break even in a couple of years. It frustrates me because I felt like I was making a wise decision by buying a home but it turned out to be the worst decision I've made.
7. What is something you are currently struggling with?
No one will be surprised to hear that I'm struggling with the fact that I can't be active right now. I know I have to let my body heal but I sure do miss run club, vigorous workouts and getting my sweat on! Or just being able to walk/do things for myself. I'm pretty helpless on crutches.
8. Breakfast, lunch or dinner?
Dinners on the weekend as that is the meal I devote the most time and attention to.
9. Who is your celebrity girl crush?
Zoe Deschanel. I think she is so adorable!
10. Why did you start blogging?
I started my first blog to chronicle my first trip to France. I loved writing so much that I started this blog. I never could have imagined how much blogging would enrich my life and how many amazing friendships would be forged thanks to this little blog of mine.
11. Tell me about one of your plans for this summer.
In August, I'm renting a cabin on a lake in Minnesota with a small group of college friends. I can't believe that the 6 of us were able to find a weekend that we were all free! I'm really looking forward to a weekend of girl time. And it worked out perfectly as Phil has a guys golf weekend the same weekend so we'll both get some time away with our friends.
My questions!
1. How old were you when you flew for the first time?
2. What is your favorite color?
3. What is your go-to book recommendation?
4. What store do you buy most of your clothes from?
5. Do you prefer that the toilet paper roll be "under" or "over"?
6. What are 3 words that describe you?
7. Are there any movies you can watch over and over again without getting tired of them?
8. What is one thing you are looking forward to doing in 2016?
9. Are you a morning person or a night owl?
10. Where do you plan to go for your next vacation?
11. Do you prefer the mountains or the ocean?
Ok, I always feel bad nominating people as I don't want anyone to feel left out, so I'm making this a free-for-all! So answer some/all of the questions in the comments or do a post over on your blog (and tell me when you post it!).

11 things on the 11th
Good morning and happy Monday! I hope you all had a good weekend. Mine was good, and productive (as usual). Besides putting in a lot of study hours, my piano was delivered to my former boss's house - it feels good to have that item crossed off my to do list!
Both Melissa and San gave me a Liebster award last month and since part of the award includes listing 11 things about yourself, I thought it was fitting to do this post today!
Before I get started, here are the rules:
1. Each person must post 11 things about themselves.
2. Answer the questions that the tagger set for you plus create 11 questions for the people you’ve tagged to answer.
3. Choose 11 people and link them in your post.
4. Go to their page and tell them.
5. No tag backs!
1. I pretty much wash my dishes before I put them in the dishwasher. I know many people take a dish from the table to the dishwasher, but I do not trust that the dishwasher will get all the food particles off. So I guess you could say I view my dishwasher as a dish sanitizer since I basically wash off my dishes before putting them in there.
2. I can't handle books or movies that either justify or romanticize infidelity. The best example of this is "Something Borrowed" by Emily Giffin. I could not stand that book and would never watch the movie.
3. I can pretty much only sleep with a sleep mask or melatonin, but ideally I need both.
4. I like to dip my french fries in spicy dijon mustard and ketchup.
5. When I walk on sidewalks and tiled floors, I try not to step on the cracks. Yes, I realize that makes me like Rain Main.
6. I used to barely be able to run a mile. Now I run marathons. So believe me when I say anyone can run a marathon if they really want to as I have NO natural ability.
7. I eat scrambled eggs with salsa for breakfast almost every day. It's the only breakfast I've found that fills me up until lunch. And no, I don't have high cholesterol. I have it checked every year and it's very low so clearly my body can handle eating more eggs than the typical person does.
8. I am a total urbanite. I love Minneapolis because I can get everywhere I need to go (work, church, Target, B&N, Banana Republic, and the grocery store) on foot! This is why I am struggling with my move to Charlotte - it is NOT a city for urbanites as I will have to drive to get to most of those places.
9. My parents nickname for me when I was growing up was Fritz. I have no idea why. Oh and then we got a cat when I was in high school and we named him Fritz... So I shared a name with a cat.
10. I used to be addicted to Mountain Dew. Now I rarely drink soda.
11. I did Weight Watchers back in 2009 and lost 35 pounds. I've kept the weight off since then and truly believe that program works if you really stick to it!
Now for the questions I was asked!
Here are Melissa's questions for me:
1. Why did you start blogging, and more importantly why have you chosen to continue it over the years?
I started my first blog, An American Girl in France, to help me capture the 3 weeks I spent in France during the summer of 2008. I started this blog when I returned and have continued to blog because of the friendships I've made and the creative writing outlet it provides!
2. What was the ONE most important moment of 2012 for you, and why?
Honestly, it was probably passing the CFA. It was a huge relief and brought me one (big) step closer to having that horrible testing experience behind me!
3. If you were on a deserted island and could have any three things, what would they be?
1) A WIFI connection, 2) My nook that has a never-ending battery life (I would use the WIFI connection to download books), and 3) Clean water to drink.
4. What is your current favorite song that I should be listening to?
I will share one of my all-time favorite songs - The Luckiest by Ben Folds. If I ever get married, this just might be my first dance with my husband.
5. What is one favorite blog post you have written? (post a link!)
The most recent blog post that I am proud of writing and that got a lot of great comments is my Sorry I'm Not Sorry post from last fall about how I have redefined what it means to be 'fun'.
6. Name one of your guilty pleasures.
Mint Condition Mochas from Caribou. I don't get them very often because they are expensive and so bad for you, but I have been treating myself to them lately!
7. If you could give a piece of advice to yourself when you were 15, what would it be?
I would have told my 15 year old self: it gets better (I had a really tough time in high school). I would tell 15-year old Lisa that I'd find a sense of belonging in college and would meet people who love me for who I am - nerdy characteristics and all!
8. What book are you looking forward to reading in the near future?
I am planning on reading Emma in April and will be doing a blog-swap review of it with Becky and Kyla!
9. Tell your readers something they may not know about you!
I drink pickle juice... I know, it's gross, but I love it!
10. You’re told that you have to drop one of your social media accounts- which one, and why?
Probably twitter. I am a really spotty user and can go days without looking at it sometimes.
11. What is one thing that you truly could not live without?
A physical possession I could not live without is honestly my iPhone. It's how I primarily communicate with others, it gets me from point A to point B when I need directions, and it provides music on my walks to and from work.
And now here are San's questions for me!
1. How did you come up with and what's the meaning behind your blog name?
I originally wanted my blog to be "Spinning Yarns" but that was taken so I went with Lisa's Yarns. I thought spinning yarns would have been a fitting name for a space where I'd share the stories of my life that also incorporated one of my favorite hobbies (knitting). These days, I'd like to rename/redesign my blog and I'd call it the Francophile Files.
2. What is one of your must-have beauty products?
These days I'd have to say my Mary Kay concealer as it hides the lovely dark circles I have under my eyes.
3. Are you a coffee or tea drinker? Recommend your favorite store-bought brand.
Coffee. I really like Caribou's French Roast.
4. What is one of the hardest things you ever had to do?
Make the decision to move to Charlotte.
5. Tell me about one of your favorite people. What makes them so special?
My cousin Julie is one of my favorite people. I do not get to see her as often as I would like, but whenever I see her, it's like no time has passed. I can be completely myself in front of her, and she never makes me feel bad for crying (which is good since I cry a lot these days). She's a school counselor so that means she is one of the very best listeners I know. She never judges, she tells you the truth (even when you don't want to hear it), and she gives great advice.
6. What is your all-time favorite movie?
Probably You've Got Mail. I never get sick of that movie and I want to be Kathleen Kelly.
7. If you don't feel like preparing dinner, what's your go-to emergency dish?
I make a baked potato in the microwave. It's easy peasy, filling, and delicious.
8. What is one favorite thing you like to do for yourself?
Run.
9. Do you play an instrument?
Yes, I play the piano and I also played trumpet in high school.
10. How do you keep up with blogs? Do you subscribe by email? Do you use bookmarks? Google Reader? Other blog services?
Google Reader.
11. Tell me one of your favorite blogs to read and why you love it.
Well, I think most of you already read her blog, but I love Amber's blog, Girl with the Red Hair. Hers was the first blog I consistently read/commented on when I started blogging, and she is the first blogger I really connected with, so her blog will always hold a special place in my heart. She's funny and honest and just an all-around wonderful person.
If you are still reading this, you deserve an award! Ha. I don't like to tag people as I don't want anyone to feel left out, so while I am usually a rule-follower, I am going to break that rule! Instead, I'd love it if you answered these 11 questions in your comment or on your blog!
1. If you could live in any other city besides the one you currently live in, which one would you pick?
2. Who has been the most influential person in your life?
3. What is your favorite comfort food?
4. What is the best vacation you've ever been on?
5. How many siblings do you have?
6. If I were to visit the city where you live, what is one thing we would absolutely have to do and one restaurant we'd go to?
7. Do you speed while driving and if so, how many miles (or km) over the speed limit do you usually go?
8. Give me a book recommendation.
9. What is one thing you really want to accomplish in the next 5 years?
10. If you could painlessly change your name, what would you change it to? Or would you prefer to keep your current name?
11. When flying, do you talk to your seat mate, or are you like me and you prefer to remain silent?

Friday Miscellany
Greetings and happy Friday! I am back from what was an AMAZING vacation and am slowly assimilating back to post-vacation life. Slowly. I feel so behind after having little-to-no internet/phone access (which was actually kind of nice). Luckily I have a fairly quiet weekend ahead of me which I will be using to catch up!
Kyria gave me the One Lovely Blog Award over a month ago! I am supposed to 1) Post the award logo and picture on your blog and link back to the person who nominated you. 2) Tell seven things about yourself. 3) Nominate up to 15 additional bloggers whom you think deserve the award. 4) Post a comment on the blog of each nominee to tell them they have been nominated!
Here are 7 things about me!
1. I hate asking for directions - which makes me especially thankful for my iPhone as it typically prevents me from having to ask directions. The map application is a life saver for me!
2. I used to be really chatty as a child, I remember talking to pretty much anyone who would listen. Now? I avoid unnecessary conversations - like in places such as airplanes, groceries stores, cabs, etc.
3. I have an incredibly strong gag reflex and am super sensitive to bad smells. As a result, I really can't use a porta-potty or public restrooms in places like airplanes and trains without gagging. I usually have to put my nose in my shirt and talk myself out of throwing up.
4. I do best in smaller group settings of maybe 6-8 people. When I am in a big group, I tend to get really quiet and do more observing than talking. For that reason, I have no desire to ever do a huge blogger meet up.
5. I think that the semi-colon is probably the most misunderstood and misused of punctuation. It pains me to see it used wrongly; it can be so effective when used correctly.
6. I never thought I'd say this, but I prefer reading e-books to physical books. Don't get me wrong, I still love physical books as I would love to have a library some day, but e-books are so much easier - especially when traveling. I just love how light and portable my nook is!
7. The last day of my last 2 big vacations have sucked - I hope this is not a trend. Last year when I went to Paris, my flight got cancelled due to a snow storm, I got majorly delayed and re-routed through Atlanta, and my luggage got lost. On this trip, I fell and got lost during my run (more on that in my Monday Marathon post). Then on my walk to the train station, I got followed by this creepy/crazy guy who took my picture about 8 times (ick). And then on the flight home, a guy in my row (who I think was intoxicated) loudly puked (and yes I had to fight my gag reflex). So yah, I am 0-2 on ending my last 2 big vacations on a high note! Oh well, it makes it easier to return to reality after my vacation end like that!
I am usually a rule follower, but will be skipping the picking of 15 bloggers as I have too hard of a time doing that! Instead I'd love it if you share some (or 7) random tidbits about you!

Blogger Award
Way back in March, Kyria of Travel Spot graced me with this blogger award. Over a month later, I am finally getting around to doing it!
I am supposed to list 5 random things about myself and pass it onto 5 people!
1. I love puzzles - except human ones... aka pretty much all of my ex-boyfriends....
2. I do most of my runs on the various lake paths around Minneapolis and I sort of HAVE to run counter clockwise. I've tried switching it up and running clockwise, but it just feels 'wrong'.
3. If I could wear a dress every day, I would! Dresses are my favorite thing to wear by far. I'm slowly building up my dress wardrobe so I can wear them nearly every day.
4. I may or may not drink pickle juice from the jar on a somewhat regular occasion... I just figure it means I am lacking in sodium or something as I only tend to crave it when I am running a fair regularly (like I am these days).
5. I need more personal space than the average person. I kind of hate it when someone uses the bathroom stall next to me when there are other stalls further from mine open... or sits next to me on the bus... or stands too close to me in an elevator.
I am supposed to list 5 people, but it is too tough to choose. So instead, I'd love it if you share some random tidbits of information about you!

Blog Love
The fabulous Anais of Through Green Eyes graced me with Beautiful Blogger award back in December! She recently traveled to Geneva to visit her parents for Christmas and fit in a trip to Paris for 4 days - isn't that fantastic? I might be a bit green with envy - I am head-over-heels in love with Paris!! I wish she could have packed me in her suitcase!! My heart definitely belongs to Paris!!
I also received this award from pinkflipflops last week! I wish we lived closer so we could meet up over a glass of wine and chat about books! She is the brains behind the Blogger Book Club and keeps it going with posts through out the week! Want to weigh in on what we read this month? Hop over to her blog - the voting buttons are up! I am rooting for Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier because I keep hearing great things about that book!
Thanks Anais & Pinkflipflops!
I now have to pass this award onto 7 other blogger and have to tell you 7 things about myself:
1. I wear a sleep mask every night. I am stealing this one from Anais - she's the only other person I know that does this. I have worn one for the last 2 years and the sleep mask is to me what a pacifier is to an infant. You know how infants often need a pacifier to fall asleep because they have an attachment to it and it calms them? Same thing w/ the sleeping mask. So I am basically regressing back to infancy. Great.
2. I'm a total home body. I love meeting up with friends for drinks and dinner, and it's fun to go out in the city, but I prefer to leave the bar by midnight (at the latest). I know my limits - my carriage turns into a pumpkin around 12:30.
3. I used to collect Coke memorabilia. I have no idea how this got started, but by the time I graduated from high school, the shelf that ran along the wall of my bedroom was pretty much covered with coke stuff. And my walls were painted maroon and there was a wallpaper border with a sort of vintage coke label. And I had a coke puzzle that I had put together framed and hung it on the wall. Yah, I don't even drink coke anymore. Nor do I have any attachment to Coke memorabilia but I sure did in high school. Gosh I was a dork.
4. I don't drink soda anymore. I gave up Mountain Dew as a New Years Resolution in 2009 (used to drink 2+ cans/day). Then I gave up soda in August. I will occasionally have a glass of diet coke if I am out for dinner as a treat, but that's the only time I drink it! And I don't miss it one bit.
5. I hate beer. I tried to like it, I really did. I never took to it, though. I was the girl who would show up a tail gating party with a bottle of vodka and a carton of lime aid. It's a good thing I never grew to love it since I now live Gluten Free. From what a hear, GF beer isn't so great...
6. I did Locks of Love back in the fall of 2007 and I would totally do it again! When I went in to get my hair cut off, the hair dresser asked if I needed a moment before she started chopping away and I said no way! I was not sad to see those 10 inches of hair go!
7. I love Burt's Bees Wax Chapstick. I have tubes of it at work, in my purse, and all over my house. I can't stand to be without the stuff!
I know I am supposed to pick 7 people, but I just can't do it. I think all of you are beautiful and I love reading every one's blogs! So you should totally do this post on your blog - or at a minimum, please tell me a couple of random facts about you!!

Happy 101
Good morning and Happy Friday! The lovely Becky of Love Everyday Life gave me this award!! Thank you, Becky! Her blog is so lovely - if you don't already read it, go check it out! She lives in the D.C. area - an area that I have yet to visit. It's on the list so I hope to some day visit. I can imagine us chatting about books over warm drinks at Starbucks, and hopping in and out of bookstores!

The rules of this award:
List 10 things that make you happy.
Try and do at least one of them today.
Tag 10 bloggers that brighten your day.
Link back to the person that tagged you.
1. Starbucks lattes and the friendly barristas that serve them to me - and the fact that they are all learning my name, one by one!
2. Waking up without an alarm clock.
3. Being with my nephews - especially playing games like Chutes & Ladders, Memory, and CandyLand. Confession: I enjoy the games as much as they do!!
4. Going to Bella Lana and buying new yarns & patterns.
5. Knitting! It's so relaxing and it makes me happy when I create beautiful things!
6. Running
7. Sitting on the dock at my parents' cabin. Especially if I am sipping a blender drink that my mom makes - she makes the best daiquiris and always uses fresh fruit! They are delish!
8. Playing cribbage with my Dad. It's "our game" and he never turns me down when I ask him to play!
9. Buying plane tickets to visit friends, family, or a new city.
10. Reading your blogs & getting comments from you!
And so much more! I like that I've been focusing more on what makes me happy and thankful. Life is really all about perspective. And sometimes happiness is a choice - you have to choose to focus on the good things in life and let go of the disappointments and things that bring you down.
Now for my 10 - dang this is tough!
1. Abby of The Adventures of Abby and Ryan
2. Nora of Walking Through the Rain
3. Amber of Girl with the Red Hair
4. Mandy of Just a Small Town Girl
5. Lisa-Marie of This Girl...
6. Heidi of Cherry Blossoms
7. Nicole of My Life with a Crazy Puppy
8. Emily Jane
9. Kyla Roma
10. One Little Fish
Oh, that was tough. I read and love so many blogs!!
Hope you all have a fantastic weekend! I'll be celebrating my best friend's birthday tonight! I can't wait!!

In order to accept this award I have to answer the following questions and then pass the love onto six other bloggers, so here goes.
By the way, I've answered these before but was restricted to answering w/ one word, so I am re-answering them since I can now expound on answers if need be!

Honest Scrap

I was tagged by OH of OH! BOOKS...PAPER...REAL LIFE. The rules? I have to list "10 things others don't know about me".
Hmm. 10. That's alot - especially for someone like me that is sort of an open book. Here goes.
1. I have been told that I should never play poker. I do not have a poker face. You can easily tell when I am happy, sad, mad, frustrated, etc. It totally shows in my eyes and my facial expressions.
2. I used to have trouble with insomnia. Then it went away. Well, it's back with avengeance. Not fun. I kind of want to take a Benadryl every night - but I won't because I don't want to have to rely on something to help me fall asleep. I am hoping this is a passing phase.
3. I am really anal/OCD about the randomest things. Like towels. I have purple and gray towels in my bathroom - I will only use purple towels in the morning and gray towels in the evening. Bizarre, I know.
4. When I talk on the phone, I often stand in my kitchen and step on every other tile. Back and forth. Back and forth. See #3 - yes, I have OCD tendencies.
5. I love to sing along to songs when I am driving - but if I pull up next to someone in traffic or at a stop light, I will either stop singing or I will stop moving my lips because I don't want it to look like I am talking to myself!
6. I kind of hate Halloween - at least as an adult. I love celebrating it with my nephews. But you will never be able to talk me into going to a costume party. I will boycott it and show up in my usual clothing and say I am a librarian or something like that.
7. I have a twin! Kidding. I don't. But I feel like my little sister is my twin. We've been told we look alike, our nephews have trouble telling us apart, and we have a lot in common. I think out of the 5 kids in my family, we are the most similar!
8. I used to be a sun godess and layed out for hours. Not anymore. I am diligent about applying sunscreen because Skin Cancer freaks me out!
9. I can't stand ticking clocks. If I can hear one when I am falling asleep, I have to get up and take the batteries out because that ticking will drive me crazy!!
10. I adore knitting! It's one of my favorite hobbies.
So there you have it - still want to read my blog after reading about all my quirks?
I am supposed to tag people, but I am going to break the rules (for a change) and ask any of you that are interested to do this on your blog. I LOVE reading random facts about people!
