5 Things Friday

Well, I survived my first week back from vacation!  I dove right back into work on Tuesday so that forced me to get over the jet lag pretty quickly.  I think I am *mostly* back on EST, but I do get REALLY tired in the late afternoon so hopefully that subsides soon.

I thought I'd close out the week with a 5 Things Friday post.

1.  The next 2 weeks are going to be super chaotic for me.  I have work trips to Denver and Houston, a fun weekend trip to NYC to help celebrate Alli's birthday, and then I fly home on the 20th for Christmas.  I will barely be around the next 2 weeks but this is of course a good thing!  I am super excited for my NYC trip and trip home for Christmas!!!

2.  It's going to be 70F here today.  It's probably about 5F degrees back home.  I am not envious of the bitterly cold temps, but I am homesick for snow and real winter weather (don't hate me for saying that).  I am just not the kind of person who can appreciate warm temps in December.  When January rolls around, I will appreciate them.  But right now this warm weather makes it hard for me to get in the Christmas spirit.

3.  Speaking of Christmas, I don't have a tree this year (or any Christmas decorations) since I knew I wouldn't have room for it in my tiny apartment.  I am not around much so it's not a huge deal, but I do miss seeing the glow of my Christmas tree in my apartment.  I love seeing the photos everyone else is posting of their trees, though!

4.  I am gone a lot this month, but then after that I have very little planned.  2014 is so very up in the air for me so I don't feel like I can or should plan much so that I can have the flexibility to fly back for interviews if need be.  I have about 1 trip planned/month for January-March, but that is way less than I was gone this fall. Which makes me feel anxious as that is A LOT of time to spend in Charlotte.  I am really hoping that I travel a lot for work to make this tolerable because I just really don't think I can handle all that time in Charlotte.  Clearly my feelings for this city have not improved at all.  Sorry I'm not sorry, this city is not a good fit for me.

5.  On a positive note, I am doing a day trip to Boone tomorrow with my local friend Lori.  It's a cute town that is located in the Blue Ridge Mountain area.  Lori went to college there so I know she will be a fantastic tour guide.  I am looking forward to having a whole day to catch up with her as we haven't seen each other since September!

What's on your mind today?

When I read your blog and you said two weeks until you come home for Christmas, my eyeballs popped! It made me realize how fast time is flying and all the Christmas prep that still lies ahead! These two weeks will fly - oh my! Hang in there and just focus on the future!

Wow! You have quite a month planned! That is fantastic! I have a fun month planned as well, no traveling here - but lots of parties planned!

The weather during xmas is the hardest thing for me too about living here. But, I have learned to just love the ability to be outside 365.

Have so much fun in Boone! That is the one place I missed on my trip because I was just exhausted at that point but I kind of regret it now. Can't wait to hear all about it!

1. I'm so excited to see you next week! (and to have you meet Chris- be warned Becky and Mandy expect full reports)

2. As much as I hate the cold and snow, as a Northeasterner, I think it's too weird to celebrate the holidays is warm weather. You're supposed to hang ornaments and light menorahs wearing a sweater and sipping hot chocolate.

3. I'm going with Chris to pick out his tree this weekend. I've never done this before- should be fun!

4. This "city" is not a good fit for you... Calling Charlotte a city is pretty generous. I'm glad you're not sorry, you're entitled to your feelings and opinions.

5. Have so much fun. I can't wait to hear about it!

Yay! Going to Boone tomorrow? Of course that's where I went to school as well. You have to go shop Main street in Blowing Rock and see some of King Street in Boone. I practically lived at Macado's. And Kelley and I met at Twigs in Blowing Rock in 1996. We try to get back there when we visit the area.

This is the good time of year to be living in the South. Yes 72* today is great, but sunday it's only getting up to 41*. and no snow, ever, makes it seem like winter isn't real to you. But the cold is generally enough for us.

FInally, check out http://www.booneweather.com/Webcams/Canyons+Cam - Kelley lived next door to this restaurant back in the day. You're in for a treat.

I definitely don't mind warm weather whenever it comes but I can see why it would make it hard to get in the Christmas spirit! We've had weird warmish, rainy weather most of the week. Apparently we are getting some snow and cold temps this weekend. I think I'm now at the point that I just want to live somewhere that is 50-75 all year round and very sunny.. oh and while I'm asking for things, I want it to get dark around 7 or 8 instead of like 3- I swear it was dark at 3:30 today lol.

I'm sure you will end up filling up those early 2014 weekends once you have more of a "plan"- hopefully you'll have a lot of interviews in MN to travel for!

Have fun in Boone tomorrow- post some pics on Instagram- I'm curious to see what it looks like!

That is super fun you have a day trip planned tomorrow! That will be great!

While I really like having SNOW this time of year I do not enjoy the frigid temperatures we've had the last week. I much prefer -5 C range (so in the 20's F?) these days. But I won't complain too much because it is -35 C (-31 F) in my hometown today!! Brrr!

On my mind today is unwinding after a long week. The first year of teaching seriously NO JOKE.

Your day trip sounds like fun!! I can't wait to hear about it!!

I hope in 2014 you will be able to make it to a special wedding! So there's a possible plan for you!! Except... We still dont have a date. Lol ;)

Sorry no tree! Maybe you can just get like a little light-up star for your window or something? I feel bad you don't have a tree!

I haven't set a tree up yet ... but I think that will happen tomorrow.

We are only in the 30s and I'm over winter. We haven't even had a 'real' snow yet but I am over it. Cannot wait for spring break!

I feel like I've read books that have taken place in Boone…maybe?

Good luck with the jet lag - I hear it takes one day for every hour time difference! You should be done soon!

Don't beat yourself up about Christmas spirit - we're having warmer weather up here too and between that and Christmas coming so quickly this year I think a lot of people are struggling!

I like Boone and that whole area a lot -- I'm sure you and Lori had a great time!

Maybe a teeny tree with just lights from the dollar store -- or some lights a dangling somewhere -- just for the twinkle!

On my mind...I need a new place to live, a new computer, and maybe a new car in the next two months. Lots on my list for Santa ha!

It's been in the 70s-80s here and as much as I wish for cooler temps to make it feel more Christmassy... I also haaaaate the cold so I'm trying to just enjoy it while it lasts. I'm sure the cold weather will find its way to the South soon!

I can't believe Christmas is so close! Just two full weeks of work left, until it all hits. Crazy. Good thing is that I'm mostly done with my Christmas shopping - I'm never done this early! Woo!

You have such a fun December planned. Enjoy it all!

I wonder if you treat your job search in a similar vein to studying for the CFAs ... setting aside (a lot less) time each weekend to research companies, network, respond to emails, etc. ... that way, even though you're spending time in Charlotte, you're productively moving forward with your plan to leave Charlotte sometime in the first half of 2014.
