Five Things Friday

Oh Friday, I'm so happy to see you.  This was a short week at work since I had Monday off but it sure felt long!  Here's a hodge podge of what's on my mind today.

1.  When I lived in Charlotte, Nilsa gave me a sentence-a-day journal.  My goal was to write down something good that happened every day.  I kept up with it for awhile but then really fell off the wagon but on January 1st I resumed writing something every day.  It's a good exercise to end the day reflecting on something good that happened.

2.  On that note, it's been fun to look back on what I was writing about a year ago. For instance, a year ago this week I started to run again (with lots of walk breaks).  But it's weird to read the entries because a year ago I was living in Charlotte.  Isn't it weird that I lived in Charlotte? Sometimes it just feels like a really long bad dream that didn't actually happen.  And then I go back and read blog posts from that time that are rife with raw emotions and it feels a lot more real and makes me even more thankful that I'm where I am today.

3.   We have very little going on this weekend and I am so happy about that.  Tonight we are going to a game night at another couple's house and then tomorrow night we are staying in and I am trying a new chicken enchilada recipe.  Since I don't have much planned I am going to try to participate in the Penguin Randomhouse Readathon on Saturday.  Normally I would feel a little guilty about reading for 4 hours straight on a weekend afternoon but since it's an official event maybe I will feel less guilty!

4.  Speaking of reading, right now I'm reading Runaway for my local book club which I borrowed from the library, I just downloaded The Book Of Unknown Americans from the library and I'll be picking up The Book of Strange New Things and The Rosie Effect from the library this weekend.  I heart the library so much!

5.  I've had some odd pain in my foot that extends up through my leg so my workouts have been really lame this week as I've only been able to bike and do upper body stuff.  I was a little paranoid that I was having an RA flare-up but I don't think the pain is consistent with the pain I had in the past...  so I just hope that whatever is going on resolves itself soon so I can return to my normal level of activity.  Plus it's been so mild outside lately, it pains me to not take advantage of it and get some longer runs in!

What's on your mind today?  Any fun weekend plans?

We've had a few days of pretty mild weather here, too, and I wish I could take advantage! But it's been pouring rain since yesterday afternoon, so I don't feel so bad heading to the gym instead of enjoying the weather.

I think a sentence a day journal is such a great idea! I started one on the computer, but I just don't remember to do it, or I don't want to fire up the computer after a long day at work. Maybe I need to start a paper one... I really love looking back at the entries. I used to keep a real journal but haven't done it in a long time, which is sad, but things get in the way!

Bummer about your leg pain! I just fell and twisted my ankle pretty bad last night and I've been hobbling around this morning. I am thinking that a long run may be out of the picture this weekend, so I may be doing 4 hours of reading too!

Checking out all those books! I don't write in my journal every day, but I have been writing a bit more.

When I was having a hard time when we first moved to Pittsburgh I did the "write down one good thing that happened today" thing too and I need to pick it back up. Daily gratitude is such a great practice!

That Readathon sounds like such a fun event - wish I could participate, but I think I may try to go to an amusement park this weekend. Maybe! It's going to be rainy this weekend, but Saturday afternoon should be sunny and in the 60s so it might be the perfect time to go!

We have had a more mild winter week, too; it's been nice! No real plans this weekend, apart from going to see a play tomorrow night. Need to declutter/clean the house up a bit, get in a few more days of exercise and that's about it. We are SO exciting :)

I always get that feeling when I look back.. like "was that really my life?" Especially when I look way back it just feels like a dream. On my mind today... just pushing to the weekend! No big exciting plans, just meeting up with friends and running : )

Oh no, I hope your foot is feeling better soon. At least it's the off season and you don't have a race next week or something like that. We also have very little going on this weekend and I'm so excited to have most of the day Saturday and Sunday to stay close to home.

Sometimes I feel the same way about parts of my past that I struggled through. Was that really my life? It's definitely a strange feeling!

Ooooh I didn't even know about that readathon but I just might join you and spend 4 hours reading on Saturday too. That sounds amazing :)

I really hope your foot/leg/hip pain gets sorted out soon. Sucks to not be able to workout especially for those of us who are really addicted to sweating and moving (in a good way)!!

Too bad about the leg pain. Hope it feels better soon. :)

Love the idea of a sentence-a-day journal - it seems like a good way to reflect on the day without being overwhelming.

A sentence a day would be a good start for me. Maybe I could actually eventually finish a blog post! have a great weekend!

You might have inspired me to write about the 5 year journal. I LOVE IT. I'm on year 7 (2nd journal).

I really love this about having a blog... that you can go back and see what you wrote a week, month or year ago and know what was up :)

Have a fun weekend! Hope your foot pain will go away quickly.

I'm glad you're having a low level weekend -- I think you could use it. Be careful of that foot, OK? You don't want to take any chances!

Love the sentence a day. That's very doable!

Those journals are awesome! I LOVE that 5 year memory book you gave me.. it's so much fun to see what I was doing/going through 1 year ago. Instead of writing down my blessing from the day, I just write a quite synopsis in 3 sentences of my day. It's awesome. And good perspective, because I do find the blessing from each day!

I am sorry your foot is giving you issues. Being it's a "shooting" pain - that sounds like nerve pain, though! Have you tried myofacial release? (ie rolling it out on a tennis ball?) I pray you feel btter asap!!

Don't feel guilty about your reading challenge! 1) you've earned it and 2) that's awesome!!

I like the idea of writing something every day - I used to journal a lot, but haven't done it since I started blogging.

No big weekend plans ... we're staying in and cooking :-)

That pain does sound like a pinched nerve or inflammation of sorts. I hope you get relief! I am struggling with a pinched nerve in the thoracic area of my back which shoots down my left arm. I went to the chiropractor twice and it has helped but still not 100%. It is not fun having pain and for you not to be able to run is frustrating!
Sounds like you have lots of books on your list! Hope they are "good reads"!

Awww, I'm so glad the sentence a day journal is serving its purpose for today, but also for looking back at your life a year ago. I got off track with mine sometime around Thanksgiving and haven't really gotten back on track. I need to start doing it again - because, I now have two years of entries to re-read!
