Adventures in Awkwardness: Chapter 1

I am always telling people that I feel like my life could be a screenplay for a dorky ABC Family movie. I just feel like I have more than my share of awkward encounters - especially when it comes to dating. So today I am kicking off a new blog post series called, "Adventures in Awkwardness." I'm excited to share some of my stories with you! They were all somewhat traumatic when they occurred, but with time I have been able to see the humor in them.

Today's story actually hasn't occurred yet, but it's a scenario that has the makings for complete and utter awkwardness. Without further ado, here goes.

One of my co-workers is getting married in Iowa over Memorial Day weekend. He's been a good friend to me so I feel that it's important to go to this wedding.

But here's the thing. The only other guests I will know are my 2 two ex-boyfriends.

I will most likely be sitting at a table with The Charioteer (ex-bf that sits 6 cubes away) and Deux (ex-bf that sits 2 floors above me).

Holy awkward. The Charioteer & Deux are friends, but I don't know if that makes it less awkward or more awkward? And I think Deux might bring his new girlfriend.

I am almost tempted to place a "SWF seeks Wedding Date" personal add, a la the movie Wedding Date.

I mean, if someone could guarantee that a Dermot Mulroney look alike would show up at my door as a result of placing said ad, I'd be all for it.

But most likely, I'd be the victim of the next Craigs List murderer or something like that.

So I will suck it up, attend solo, and find one hell of a dress to wear. In fact, I am doing a little 'fashion show' at my best friend's house next week so she can help me select the perfect outfit. And we are going to get manicures together... Is it shallow that I want to make sure I look really good?

I'm sure I'll share a recap of how it all went sometime in June. I am crossing my fingers that it doesn't turn out to be as awkward as I am imaging it!

It is so, so not bad that you want to look good! It's how we arm ourselves.

When I split up with my boyfriend before Dave, I was at uni, and as well as me going out with him, 3 of my friends went out with friends of his. This meant that having been dumped by him, I had to see him EVERY TIME my friends and I went out. It was bad times!

Wow I am impressed that you are going! I find nothing wrong at all with finding the perfect outfit. My number 1 confidence booster is very tall heels. I'm 5'8 so when I wear 4 inch heels it puts me at 6 and it's fabulous! I would also suggest if possible making a hair and makeup appointment. Why do your own if you don't have to!!

It is not selfish at all. You are entering a situation where you feel, well, uncomfortable.. And you want to be looking your very greatest - and be screaming confidence :)

I will be thinking of you that weekend.

Yikes.

You're life really could be a movie, Lisa ;)

Oh no! This is such a pickle. But there is nothing wrong with wanting to look stunning for the evening. Have a good time!

The best thing to do is look awesome and just enjoy yourself. While yes, it may be awkward, its also an opportunity to just have a lot of fun. You never know what can happen.

I love that you have a tag called "I can't make this stuff up." That is awesome!!

*It is totally normal that you want to look and feel your best! I hope you have a great time and I can't wait for the recap post-wedding.

At the very least, I'd imagine this will make for excellent blog fodder!!

It is not shallow that you want to look good! In situations such as this, you most certainly want to look your best. Excited to see what you end up wearing (you'll share, right?)

Okay just think of it this way: "this will make for a really good story for the blog!" Killer dress, mani/pedi, the works - it's not bad to show them what they're missing!

oh honey, been there...when I realized that all hopes of getting through the evening with a little bit of grace and a little bit of dignity (not a lot, just a little) were shattered at 5:30pm I decided to turn to cocktails.

(is it a coincidence that it was lesson #13...)

Hahaha, I think it might go better then you think it will. And looking smashing is a MUST, you might meet a handsome, eligible man there ;)

DON'T forget to take pictures of this hotness!!!

Honestly...looking amazing is a must! Don't feel guilty about that. It makes you all the more confident :)

I'm dreading my next conference because I'm sure my ex is going to be there and we had a somewhat "messy" breakup. I've been wracking my mind on what outfits I have that would make me look amazing YET professional. Dilemmas...

I'm looking forward to your next installments of adventures although I pray that you won't have many more to speak about! (for your sake)

I always, always, always want to look good for the exes, heck, even guys I went on just two dates with! It's just the way girls are, I think. Kind of a "see it and weep" sort of thing =)

If you need help deciding which dress, you can always post pics and do a blogger poll =)

Haha. Well, no matter how awkward it may be, a slammin' dress (yes, i just said that) and a manicure will knock 'em dead or jealous. ;)

Heck no, that's not shallow! Look fabulous!!!

Looking good for the ex is just part of the deal. Breaking up meens you will forever have to put on extra eyeliner for him, or whatever it is...

Sounds like it will be an adventure. Maybe don't get too drunk. Or do, actually.

Lol you make me laugh Lisa. Trust me, I've had some awkward ex boyfriend encounters so I hear you. This weekend during one of my two weddings I'll be sitting at a table with Eric and this guy I haven't seen in over 10 years, but when I did...there was talk of us hooking up, never actually happened but it was like 9th grade haha...just hoping that doesn't come up after he has a few drinks haha. Not that we couldn't all laugh about it now. I mean seriously, who talks about hooking up but doesn't? Oh yes- 14 year olds. Though I have to say, I am looking forward to that more than the wedding where I am sitting with not a single person that I know while Eric sits at the head table. Oh weddings...right?

I expect to hear how this turns out June 1st! Oh, and to see pictures of the hot dress you are going to wear.

Oh my gosh Lisa, you are too cute! I would be the EXACT same way, and would go to great lengths to make sure I looked and felt FABULOUS that day!
I love your reference to the movie Wedding Date! I just saw it again a few weeks ago and seriously, if that's they kind of guy you get when you do those things then heck yea! Unfortunately, you're right...that's never how it goes!
Good luck! I give you MAJOR credit for having the guts to go, I would have probably tried to find some lame excuse as to why I couldn't make it. You are a good friend and I hope he appreciates all your going through for him!!

Ugg yes that is totally awkward but I would be the same way and want to look amazing!!

Oh my God - that does sound like it has the makings for a sitcom! I hope it goes well, and doesn't end up being awkward for you. And I think you've got the right attitude: get a killer dress and look amazing. You can handle anything when you know you look like a knock-out!
