Friday Miscellany

Greetings and happy Friday!  I am back from what was an AMAZING vacation and am slowly assimilating back to post-vacation life.  Slowly.  I feel so behind after having little-to-no internet/phone access (which was actually kind of nice).  Luckily I have a fairly quiet weekend ahead of me which I will be using to catch up!

Kyria gave me the One Lovely Blog Award over a month ago!  I am supposed to 1) Post the award logo and picture on your blog and link back to the person who nominated you. 2) Tell seven things about yourself. 3) Nominate up to 15 additional bloggers whom you think deserve the award. 4) Post a comment on the blog of each nominee to tell them they have been nominated!

Here are 7 things about me!

1.  I hate asking for directions - which makes me especially thankful for my iPhone as it typically prevents me from having to ask directions.  The map application is a life saver for me!

2.  I used to be really chatty as a child, I remember talking to pretty much anyone who would listen.  Now?  I avoid unnecessary conversations - like in places such as airplanes, groceries stores, cabs, etc.

3.  I have an incredibly strong gag reflex and am super sensitive to bad smells.  As a result, I really can't use a porta-potty or public restrooms in places like airplanes and trains without gagging.  I usually have to put my nose in my shirt and talk myself out of throwing up.

4.  I do best in smaller group settings of maybe 6-8 people.  When I am in a big group, I tend to get really quiet and do more observing than talking.  For that reason, I have no desire to ever do a huge blogger meet up.

5.   I think that the semi-colon is probably the most misunderstood and misused of punctuation.  It pains me to see it used wrongly; it can be so effective when used correctly.

6.  I never thought I'd say this, but I prefer reading e-books to physical books.  Don't get me wrong, I still love physical books as I would love to have a library some day, but e-books are so much easier - especially when traveling.  I just love how light and portable my nook is!

7.  The last day of my last 2 big vacations have sucked - I hope this is not a trend.  Last year when I went to Paris, my flight got cancelled due to a snow storm, I got majorly delayed and re-routed through Atlanta, and my luggage got lost.  On this trip, I fell and got lost during my run (more on that in my Monday Marathon post).  Then on my walk to the train station, I got followed by this creepy/crazy guy who took my picture about 8 times (ick).  And then on the flight home, a guy in my row (who I think was intoxicated) loudly puked (and yes I had to fight my gag reflex).  So yah, I am 0-2 on ending my last 2 big vacations on a high note!  Oh well, it makes it easier to return to reality after my vacation end like that!

I am usually a rule follower, but will be skipping the picking of 15 bloggers as I have too hard of a time doing that!  Instead I'd love it if you share some (or 7) random tidbits about you!

I'm like you in a groups. In fact, 6-8 is still kind of big for me! I do much better in groups of 2-4. I hate butting in and hate feeling like I interrupted people.

That sucks about the bad luck on the end of trips, and also so weird! I would dread that. Hopefully that was just random and your next trip won't end so randomly!

I completely forgot about your bad last day in Paris too! Not good! When we got off the train the other day, we were warned not to take rides from the guys standing outside pretending to be cabs and only get into a car that is clearly a cab. I started freaking out that you had gotten into the cab with one of the sketchy guys. Eric was like, number one you were JUST talking to Lisa on the train and she is clearly fine. He also said you were too smart to do that but I swear if they didn't warn us I would've thought they were just cab drivers out of their cabs! Apparently I can no longer be trusted to travel alone.

Anyway, I agree fully about huge groups. In particular big groups of people I don't know well I am not good at. I will also probably not ever do a big blog meet up... also because I feel like most of the people I talk to also wouldn't do one so no one I really want to see would be there haha. I'm a big fan of the 3 or 4 group size. I've started to like 3 better than 2 recently because I feel like it gives everyone kind of a break from the conversation. I'm not the best at silence unless I feel really comfortable with someone so if no one is talking I feel like I need to say something haha. Oh, social awkwardness.

I almost gagged when I read about your flight experience! That is awful! Hope you get lots of rest & time to get caught up this weekend!
It sounds like you had a wonderful trip, though!

At least you already know you're not going to enjoy the last day of vacation. Usually that comes as such a dissapointment!

I agree with Amber about the groups; <----(semicolon) I would rather have 2-4. I think once the group reaches 5, I pretty much butt out. Like she said, I don't want to interrupt or feel like I think that what I am saying is more important than what others are saying! I work with a bunch of people who are the opposite; they will interrupt to talk about themselves (and how cool they are) and it drives me nuts!

I am glad you had fun (except for the puking situation) and are back safe and sound!

I do my best with just 1-2 people. I start getting lost and quiet when groups are 4+. 6-8 is actually a VERY big group for me.

I would probably never do a huge blogger meet-up but I am contemplating Bloggers in Sin City next year, only because I think it would be a good experience for me, plus there is a group of us that wants to go that is scared we'll have no one to talk to... so we'll all have each other! Haha. But I'm still worried about my tendency to completely shut down in social settings so I'm wavering. But I also don't want to NOT go just because I'm shy! So, yeah. I totally understand where you're coming from, though!!

Right there with you on the porta poddy. I would rather give myself a UTI! I hate outdoor bathrooms hence why when I was younger I passed on going to my fully paid girl scout camp (I had sold the most cookies out of my troop) due to the bathroom arrangements.

I can completely identify with number 2. I think part of the change may be that I started to realize that people didn't like me talking ALL THE TIME. But I feel like I never figured out have to talk without going over the top. Which is probably a lot of the reason that I hate small talk now.

Yes! I love your mini rant on the semi colon. I loved using the semi colon when I had to write papers. It was almost a mini challenge to me ..."Let's see where I can use a semi-colon."

That is horrible about your trip back. And scary about that guy taking pictures. What did you do? That is horrible!

And the guy puking? Helll no! I seroiusly would lose it. I hate being around intoxicated people for that reason. I don't care how many vomiters I see in my nursing career -- my heart will always race, and I was always get grossed out by puking.

Welcome home -- what a horrible trip back this time. I think that probably is worse than being stranded in a snowstorm -- and Mr. Creepo? Yuck! But glad the rest of it was good and as always, glad to see you here!

Oh MY, Lisa! What a terrible way to return home. Sorry to hear about that guy near you on the plane. Yuck!! And creepers = no bueno.

I love how you cleverly inserted a semi-colon into that bullet. Nice work. I completely agree - I can't tell you how many times I edit papers and presentations where the semi-colon is sorely abused.

Your gag reflex makes me giggle, Eric has a really bad one too!

I can't think of anything right now about myself though. I am feeling deliriously tired these days! haha
