10 Days of Thanksgiving: Day 4

Today I am thankful for podcasts.

I discovered podcasts around this time last year when Serial became uber popular.  After hearing friends rave about it, I decided to check it out. Serial was my entry drug. Now if I am listening to something on my phone while walking or driving or cooking, it's probably a podcast.  In fact, I might need to change my monthly recap to "Podcasts, Books, Miles and Looks" because I barely listen to new music anymore.  It's kind of sad because I do miss listening to music at times, but I just love listening to a podcast and falling down the rabbit hole of whatever topic is being discussed from female friendships to the latest book releases to starting a new company.

Another unintended benefit of podcasts is that listening to podcasts has broken my terrible habit of texting while driving.  I never should have been texting and driving in the first place but now it's out of the question because I can't text, drive and listen to a podcast as that's entirely too much multi-tasking.

I'll close with a list of my 5 favorite podcasts!

1.  Start-Up - This is a podcast about starting a new company.  Even if you have no interest in starting your own company (which is the case for me) it's totally intriguing.  Plus I love the voice of the main host, Alex Bloomberg.

2.  Book Riot - Book Riot has several podcasts but my favorite one is their main one. The hosts talk about what's new and exciting in the world of books.  As a lover of reading, I love listening to this!

3.  Starr Struck Radio - In this podcast, a husband wife duo banter back and forth about topics such as morning routines, the decision about when to have children, impostor syndrome, and so on.  I like that they often don't agree with each other as it makes for a more interesting discussion.

4. Death, Sex and Money - In this podcast the host covers topics related to, you guessed it, death, sex or money. The host, Anna Sale, has my favorite voice of the female podcasters that I listen to.  I like that the episodes tend to be shorter (around 30 minutes) and introduce me to subjects and people I had never thought about or would have encountered otherwise.

5.  Books on the Nightstand - Of course 2 out of my 5 favorite podcasts are book related!  The last podcast to make my top 5 list is another literary podcast that is hosted by 2 people who work in the publishing industry. The episodes are typically 30-40 minutes long and have some sort of theme with book recommendations at the end.  Listening to these two talk makes me REALLY wish I worked in the publishing industry!

What are you thankful for today?

I really wish I worked in the book publishing industry. Can you imagine if reading was your job!? I think I would like it. Also, I love Alex Bloomberg. He used to host Planet Money and I really like that show as well, although now it's not quite the same without him. He is still on TAL from time to time though.

I am glad you finally caught the podcast bug! I tried to tell you for years! Ha! Actually, I have several friends who I have tried to tell, but usually their eyes glaze over and the idea of having to download an app in order to listen etc just seems like too much work. Plus they don't think listening to someone talk for an hour sounds that great, I guess. However, it's the best thing ever and you feel that you are not wasting time when you are running or driving or whatever.

My favorites are still TAL, Planet Money, Freakonomics and The Moth, but I also listen to the news (Bloomberg), The Motley Fool, Start Up and two running podcasts, Trail Runner Nation and Ultra Runner Podcast.

I have never listened to a podcast but it does sound interesting. Thanks for sharing your favorites!
And yes, I can understand why you would be interested in publishing work!

The only podcast I could get into was Serial, so I'm anxiously waiting it's return :) I've been on an audiobook kick, though; I listen to them on my commute to work and when I'm doing house work. It's changed the commute + my thoughts on house work!

I love Alex Bloomburg's voice, too. And I like how he's totally open to talk about his mistakes and bumbles. It's really refreshing!

Those are some of my favorite podcasts, too. Now I just need Serial to come back. Let's go, Koenig!

I LOVE podcasts too. I got into them about 2 years ago now, while I was pregnant- I loved listening to The Art of Simple, which is now called "The SImple Show." Then I listened to a ton while I was on maternity leave and now always in the car or cleaning. I also never listen to music anymore and I didn't realize it until I had to fill out a music questionnaire for Max at school and I was like shoot, I need to start listening to music in the car again!

I'm in the same boat of lamenting the loss of music because that was a big part of my childhood with two musician parents. My Husband and I commute into work together and listen to NPR and then come home separately so I either leave it on NPR (inertia) or listen to an audiobook or podcast. I also love audiobooks/podcasts for house chores like cooking, cleaning, and especially folding laundry.

I recommend the Dead Authors Podcast. Pretty irreverent but sooo funny.

I love Podcasts, they've honestly changed my life. I know that sounds dramatic but they make working from home SO much less lonely. I feel like the podcast hosts are my friends/coworkers haha. I also love that I don't have to be glued to a computer to learn new things/hear thought-provoking discussion. I usually walk for an hour or more every day because I'm no longer bored on walks, which is another way they've helped working from home. I also totally agree about the texting and driving thing! I need to get into Start up!

I don't listen to podcasts much but when I read posts like yours I suspect I should!

Today I'm thankful for (ironically) a gloomy day. I've got a lot done inside and so tonight when I meet old work friends for dinner, I won't feel too guilty!

Today I am thankful that I came home to a big pot of turkey stock simmering away on the stove. It's blizzarding outside, and the wind is vicious. Christopher got home before me and started a stock and planned that we'd have chicken noodle soup for dinner - what a gem :-)

Ya I am thankful for podcasts too! I still need to check out Books on the Nightstand! My two all time favourite podcasts are probably Book Riot and Starr Struck Radio. I save those two as "treats" every week and try to listen to them on longer walks with Chloe so I can listen to them all at once. Also I have to admit I used to HATE taking Chloe for her evening walks because it used to feel like another chore but not that I listen to podcasts I look forward to our walks or hikes!

I am so excited that I am finally able to listen to podcasts. I literally was trying to figure out how to add them in my life because all of you guys raving and then boom, new job with a 35 minute commute AND I can listen during work AND I travel a lot during the day. I could never get behind doing it while running because it was hard to hear over the treadmill ha. But my favorite are Undisclosed, Book Riot podcasts, Stuff You Missed in History Class (loooove) and Starr Struck.
