Giving Thanks: Day 2

I am thankful to have grown up with a father that is a great example of a devoted husband and father - he is my measuring stick when dating!

The father/daughter relationship is such an important one and really can influence a girl's future relationships - which is why I am so thankful that I've had such a wonderful example of what a husband and father should be like. We are celebrating my parent's 40th anniversary this December and they have had a very loving, wonderful marriage. I am so lucky to have grown up around this - the older I get, the more I realize how rare it is to have witnessed a love like theirs.

I have always said that I will be a lucky girl if I can find a man like my father. You see, I am a bit really high strung so I kind of need to date and marry someone who is a little bit more laid back, like my dad. While he does have his moments where he will be intense or will get his 'feathers ruffled', in general, he is pretty calm, cool, and collected. And he has the best, quirkiest sense of humor! He's hard-working and has built such a successful business, but he is so modest. I don't think anyone would ever describe my dad as arrogant!

He has such high standards for us girls, but at the same time, he has totally welcomed my sisters' husbands into the family and I think he makes them feel like they are his own sons. I look forward to the day when I get to introduce my Mr. Right to my dad!

Your turn! It was fun reading what you were thankful for yesterday so keep the comments coming!!

I am thankful for this every day. I know growing up with a father as wonderful as mine led to me to a life with a husband as wonderful as Mark. I am so happy that you have the same standard. It doesn't mean it is easy to find someone who measures up, but it means that when you do, you will be loved and respected the way you should be. That's worth waiting for!!!

Too cute. The older that I get the more and more thankful that I grew up surrounded by men (my Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa) who believed and made me believe that girls could do anything boys could do. They never treated me any differently or expected anything more from me than they did my brother and male cousins.

I am thankful for this as well. When I was in high school my Dad and I used to argue like it was going out of style, but I've always had a great relationship with him. Now that my brother has a child it's really cool to see how delighted he is being a grandfather. And it's heart warming to see how he is with a baby (obviously I don't remember how he was when I was that young).

I'm thankful for my Dad too- he's extremely strong, challenging, approachable, and loving. My husband has a lot of those traits & I'm so thankful to have two amazing men who are so unwavering of their support of me in my life.

I'm blessed. Big Time.

Another AWESOME post!

I am thankful for my dad too, although we have a bit of a different relationship he has ALWAYS been there for me through my whole life. He took me to all my sports games, coached the teams and was always there to drive me around.

Our relationship became a bit strained over the last several years, especially once he got sick, but we are building back up to a good relationship again and I'm so thankful for that!

I've been kind of a grouch and a mope today because my laptop totally crashed last night and I might lose everything on the hard drive (ARG!) BUT this post reminded me that I have SO much to be THANKFUL for. I'm thankful that something like that is the worst thing going on in my life right now because there are a lot of people dealing with a lot worse things!

Agree with Amber, another great post! I so agree with you, a girl's relationship with her dad is soo important. I am also thankful for my wonderful dad. In my case, the old adage, "you marry your dad" is true. My husband is so much like my dad in values, morals & temperament. (Your dad and my dad are alot alike, too, Lisa. I'm sure you've heard it from Abby.)

I know when you meet your Mr. Right, he'll have many of your dad's wonderful qualities.

As someone who grew up without a dad (my parents split when I was 13, but he wasn't around much before that) I love this post. I think its so great that you had an amazing father.

I'm thankful for my grandfather who stepped in and was there for me when my own father wasn't.

I am very thankful for your dad in my life, too. He has been a part of my world for 45 years. I am proud to have him in our family. He and your mom have been there for me throughout my life. What a wonderful family they have raised. Thanks for posting about Paul! It made my day.

Loved your post. It is so so so true! Dad is such a great guy. He really is an amazing model of traits for a husband.

The unconditional love and ongoing commitment he & mom share truly inspires me.

We are so lucky to have had such a great dad during our upbringing!

Well, I couldn't agree more! He has always been such a gentle, kind, supportive husband and father. You kids always knew where he was and that he was there for you! He is so proud of each one of you and I will pull him out of his recliner to read your blog! This will make his day!

Oh this is so wonderful. It's funny, I was never that close to either of my parents growing up, but since I moved out 5 years ago my dad and I have THE best relationship ever; he was there for me through the most disastrous, nasty, abusive relationship ever and it was because of him I found my wonderful husband-to-be - I wanted to find someone who'd care about me as much as my dad did and I was done settling for complete tossers, and now I feel for the first time that I really know what being loved is all about. :) I love when people post good things about their dads :)
