When I was a Child - Winter Edition

Winter is quickly slipping away so it's time for another installment of "When I was a Child."  I have been putting this off because it really hasn't felt like winter - no complaints here!  I have experienced plenty of brutal winters in my life, I could use many more like this one....  Anyways, here is what thoughts of winters as a child conjure up...

When I was a Child...
  • Christmas was the highlight of winter.  Decorating the tree with ornaments hung from fish hooks, arranging the crib scene (and re-arranging it and re-arranging it, which drove my mom nuts), and gathering around the advent wreath each night are some of my favorite memories.
  • The Christmas season was full of baked goods and treats.  I helped put sprinkles on many, many sugar cookies and wrapped what felt like 1,000 caramels in small squares of cellophane.
  • There was always at least one snowday - possibly more!  Those days were spent reading and doing puzzles and bugging my older siblings!
  • My older sister and I spent hours upon hours skating in our backyard.  We were so sure one or both of us were going to be the next Nancy Kerrigan (well, until she got clubbed by Tonya Harding someone.)  Besides skating we also went sledding and built forts and snowmen.
  • After playing outdoors for hours, my mom would often treat us to hot cocoa with a couple of mini marshmallows.
  • I celebrated many great birthdays  My dad would usually go to work later so my mom and him could wake me up by singing happy birthday.  I got to pick what mom made for dinner (spaghetti pie was a popular choice of mine) and some years she'd get a ice cream cake from Dairy Queen.

What winter childhood memories do you have?

I spent a ton of time skating too and loved, loved Nancy Kerrigan! She also lives close to me (fun fact of the day). I also did a lot of sledding- my parents live on a hill so it was ideal for crazy days of sledding.

I am loving the mildness of this winter too- apparently we are getting some snow tomorrow though, wah- I'm already ready for spring!

Christmas was always the *big* winter thing at my house as well, it's definitely my fondest memories growing up. I don't remember ever really *enjoying* winter, because even when I was younger my best memories were in the summer time, but I spent a lot of time building crazy forts with friends and then running inside to briefly warm up. I miss being that young, sometimes!

Wow you skated in your backyard? Did you have a pond? This is so foreign to me. It never snowed where I'm from, but I do remember my dad having to scrape frost off the car window, and sitting in the car while it warmed up. I also have very fond memories of Christmas, and of sitting by the fire stringing popcorn and cranberries for garland.

Christmas for sure! That is the highlight of winter in STL. And if we had snow? BONUS! Snow days were awesome if/when they happened, sometimes we'd get a snow day for just a few inches of snow which was always nice. There were lots of fires around the fireplace, reading books, and a few years escaping to Florida to warm up a bit!

We were lucky if we got a snow day once a year.

My fondest winter memories as a child centered around Christmas, too! All the food and family gatherings, going to midnight Mass, and presents! And during Christmas vacation, we got to sleep in and go skating at the neighborhood ice pond! But my memories of blizzards aren't so fond, as my parents seemed to find big projects we needed to accomplish, like refinishing the kitchen cabinets etc! I loved school so much that staying home to work was not my choice!

I would have to say playing outside in the snow and building forts or doing whatever we did as a kid. Then coming into the house for hot chocolate with marshmellows. I definitely don't enjoy the cold as much as I did when I was a kid now though!

I love being an adult, but without a doubt the biggest disappointment of adulthood is never again having that feeling of waking up and peaking out your window to see the snow, then peaking out your bedroom door with a hopeful, expectant smile and hearing your mom say, "Yes, they just announced a snow day." Really nothing compares to it.

I am also loving this "winter", but I am kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop, so to speak. Last year, we got snow in June. I wonder if this year will be a late winter as well.

I think Christmas was probably the biggest part of winter for us. The entire thing, from getting the tree, decorating, baking cookies etc...plus all the anticipation! Once it's over, even though really that is just the beginning of winter, it kind of seemed like the rest was not as exciting!

These are so cute! I used to drive out to a rink in the country, close to where we lived, and would play ringette. I just got my first set of skates as an adult and I'm going to try them out this week! I can't wait :)

When I was a child, I remember trudging through 3 feet of snow to deliver Girl Scout cookies. Which reminds me, where the heck are our Girl Scout cookies?!?!?

We have never had a snow day in Saskatchewan, Canada, and we get snow that buries cars! As a teacher, I kind of wish we had snow days once in a while ;-)

Winter for me as a kid meant freezing while walking to school, Christmas and cozy evenings inside with my family.

Love this series!

Winter for me meant:

- days were it was way too cold for the buses to run (like -40 C) and we would stay home
- snowmobiling to my grandma's on Christmas Day
- going skiing with my dad on Sunday's and him quizzing me on my multiplication tables on the drive to the ski hill
- and after I turned 13 it meant hockey, hockey, hockey! We had practices, tournaments or games every weekend from November - March!

When I was a child, I loved having my mom home during the summers (being a teacher). It was just so nice to be able to do fun things and not be stuck at home or with a babysitter all the time. Lots of weeks spent at my grandparents' cabin with all the cousins.

Love these childhood memories posts! I have never been good at skating period, much less ice skating, so color me impressed! (Although your Tonya Harding reference makes me a little afraid of you!)

Christmas, snow days and cocoa -- I think you have most of my memories, too! Except the skating -- after breaking my arm doing that in fourth grade, I decided to give that one a pass!

As a child growing up in California (and going to a year round school with short breaks) I don't think I really understood "winter" as a season :) Nothing really changed that much!

Of course, I have lots of fun holiday memories though. My favorite tradition was my Grandma taking us to see The Nutcracker ballet every year!
