We are back from our annual summer vacation at my parents’ lake home. We had a great time and lucked out with the weather. We had one day of rain which was ok as that gave us a chance to take the boys to a local toy store and not feel guilty about ‘wasting’ a beautiful morning. When I am at the lake I feel like we have to soak up all the sunshine and beautiful views so it kind of nice to do something different.
Here is a photo-heavy recap! During our week at the lake, we…
(Belatedly) Celebrated daddy’s birthday!
Taco especially enjoyed the chocolate syrup on his ice cream! |
Phil did his annual swim across the lake (which we estimate to be about 1.5 miles). I kayak alongside/just ahead of him. Sounds idyllic, right? Well for me this is one of those things I do not enjoy doing but do out of love for Phil. This year we had calm waters to start but before long it was quite wavy. It is very hard to steer a 2 person kayak in choppy water so there were some terse exchanges when Phil took a break from swimming and would ask where exactly I was aiming the kayak. And then my wrist and forearm started to act up, I assume due to my RA. But Phil enjoyed himself and was just 1 minute slower than his previous PR.
But all in all, it was a wonderful change of scenery. And now Phil and I are back home without the boys as they will spend the week with my parents. It sounds like they’ve been on their best behavior so far. It will be nice for Phil and I to have a chance to reconnect without kids around and this gives the boys a chance to make priceless memories with their grandparents. I’ll head back to the lake on Friday morning to spend a couple nights and then will bring them back.
We have a busy fall ahead of us as I have 9 trips in the last 4 months of the year so we are going to soak up the silence and free time. The first night we were like - what do we do with all this time???

Sounds like a good break for you and the family. The swimming across the lake sounds challenging, both for you and him, but so great that you keep the tradition.
evening with the kids? what a luxury! enjoy!
This sounds so lovely, Lisa! There is nothing like solid grandparent time - it's to everyone's benefit. I'm glad they have a week with their grandparents, it will be so nice for you and Phil to reconnect without the kids around as well (BOW CHICKA WOW WOW) (or, you know, get some sleep!)
These pictures are darling, and the whole trip sounds perfect. I love this for all of you.
Ooh, it sounds amazing! What a nice break for you guys, AND what a nice break to be alone for this week! I love the story of Phil's swim across the lake. So he swims the 1.5 mile across and then you both kayak back?
Enjoy your week!
Ha ha, Nicole...
This sounds amazing (except for the kayak trip; lol marriage) and I am excited that you have a whole week, just the two of you!
Correct! He hops in when we get to the other side and then we kayak back together. It was a very quiet ride back this year as I was so ready to be done!
Enjoy your kid free time! Don't worry, you will find something to fill it;-)
Yeah, I *would* kayak so that the Hubs could swim, but it wouldn't be my favorite thing either.
Sounds like a pretty great week Lisa- hooray. Sounds like the weather (and boys mostly!) cooperated. Omg I could imagine that interaction between me and my husband re the kayak- you are a good wife haha! And now a whole week without the boys, while they are living their best lives with the grandparents- how good. Enjoy :) (This is Sophie not sure why it will only let me comment as Anonymous today).
Love these pics. Looks like such a great setup with your own sand available for the boys to play in. So often lake houses have grass that leads to the water. I'm laughing at Nicole's background music. Hee hee. Looks like a lovely time. "Where are you pointing the kayak?" - I would've had some choice words about where we could put the kayak. Bah ha ha! Enjoy your week sans kids.
Free time!! I hope you enjoy it to its fullest!
It sounds like a wonderful week and I'm so glad you now get your home-alone week. Congratulations to Phil on his swim. (Yes, I can imagine the tense moments in the kayak!)
LOLOLOL
What a wonderful week!! I had to lol over "terse exchanges" on the lake with Phil swimming and you in a kayak.
The boys look so big! Especially Taco!! And they had cousin time, too <3
Happy belated to Phil!!
How cute are those sibling shenanigans! I should try pictionary with my kids! They like playing charades and I think Pictionary is kind of the same!
It looks like a lovely week - a good combination of activity, family, and rest.
It looks like you all had a great time. Holidays with family is the best. And well done getting a photo of you all. One year I made it a goal to get a photo of all five of us once a month which really increased the number of photos I have of us all.
You got MULTIPLE photos of Phil looking at the camera - what sorcery is this?! Haha. It sounds like you had a great week at the lake and now a CHILD-FREE week at home?! That's amazing!
Both boys are looking SO BIG lately, especially Taco. He's like a real big kid now - not just a toddler.
Happy belated birthday to Phil. You got some great photos and it sounds like a great time!
OK, two things: 1. I think that photo of the four of you - which is FABULOUS - should be your Christmas card picture, and 2. I can almost hear the kayak/lake exchange. LOL. "Terse". Excellent word. :)
Those are the memories that the boys will always have!!! It's so sweet to remember back to my summers at the lake with my family!!!
