Five Things Friday

Happy Friday!  Raise your hand if you have been loving the longer hours of evening sunlight this week **enthusiastically raises hand **

I'm closing out the week with 5 random things that are on my mind!

1.  I often sing along to songs when Phil and I are in the car (or anytime I am in the car, really).  One day "Blank Spaces" by Taylor Swift came on and during the chorus I sang, "got a lovely Starbucks lover, who'll tell you I'm insane" and Phil was like - um, I don't think you have those lyrics right - Starbucks lover doesn't make much sense.  The next time the song came on he listened closer and said, she's saying "got a long list of ex-lovers, who'll tell you I'm insane."  Riiiight.  I guess that does make more sense than Starbucks lover...  But we had a good laugh over how I had thought Starbucks lover made any sense as a song lyric...

2.  So I found out that I was promoted to Vice President this month, except I found out in the most random way as a co-worker saw a story on our internal team member website listing out the promotions and told me about it.  Turns out my boss forgot to tell me during my anual review (I can't blame him - he has 70 direct reports.  Yes, 70!!).  It really is a formality because my role doesn't change, nor does my pay. So that's the first weird thing related to my "promotion."  The second weird thing is that a sales rep in another office saw the story and called to congratulate me and he said, and I quote, "Congratulations on making Vice President!  I'm really glad you weren't fired!"  He then proceeded to tell me a story about a firm that fired him years ago.  He closed our conversation by reiterating that he was glad I wasn't fired as you just never know in our industry.   And that conversation right there really sums up the industry I work in...  You could get promoted, or you could get fired.  It really feels like a 50/50 type of thing sometimes.

3.  We have had several 60 degree days this week.  The cold weather in February really threw me into a funk but my mood flipped like a light switch when the weather changed and I feel like a different person!

4.  Warm spring weather means I get to take my bike out for my first ride this weekend!  I'm so excited to get out on it!  I bought my bike in September last year so this will be my first spring/summer having a bike and I'm SO excited to log a whole lot of miles!

5. This week I activated a living social deal that I had bought this winter for 10 barre classes at a studio close to my house.  I had done a barre class once when I lived in Charlotte but struggled with it as all of the time that you spend on your tip toes in class was just too much for my poor joints.  But I've gone to two classes this week and I've been able to do everything which is exciting!  I'm so happy with how much my joints have healed.  Barre is an awesome full body workout - I highly recommend it!  When my 10-class voucher expires I will probably look into buying a 10 class pack as I think going once a week would be a fun way to add some strength training/toning work into my weekly routine.  I also love that I can walk to the studio.  I feel very lucky to have both a yoga studio and a barre studio within 4 blocks of my home.

What's on your mind today?

I thought it was Starbucks lovers too!! We aren't alone though nearly everyone I know thought the same thing, Taylor Swift even joked about it! haha :)

Congrats on the VP title, have a great weekend!!

I never really thought about the words to that song, but now that I am running it through my mind, I still feel like it is Starbucks lover!! You are right though; it doesn't really make sense.

Great job on the VP title! My coworker got promoted to VP this year and it was the same thing -- no "promotion" or pay raise, just a new title... we still got him a cake though! The industry is strange. I am wondering what will happen to all of us if there is another 2008 situation.

Have fun this weekend with your bike and the nice weather! I am hoping to get out and get some sunshine, since this week I have been totally lazy/lame about my fitness routine.

I hear you on the warmer weather totally changing how you feel. I honestly think this has been the longest, worst winter I can remember in a long time and felt so happy about some warmth this week. The extra daylight is helping too!

I am slowly making my way back into the blogging community which I am excited about! I have had a weird year and been away from it, but glad to be back. Hope you check out the new blog :)

Loving this weather! And congratulations on your new title--looks great on the resume, even if the pay or job doesn't change! Love that communication!

Happy weekend!

One of the great things about living in this region, is that we get so excited about the spring weather change! I think living in an area where it doesn't would be rather stagnant. Now I am excited to see the tulips pop out of the ground, and the grass to turn green, but I do wish that it would not grow yet! I dread mowing more each year! Sigh!
Congrats on the job title! Sounds impressive even though you didn't get a raise! If you had your own office, you would get a plaque on your door!

I've never heard "Starbucks lover" when I listen to that song but I think most people commonly mishear it that way! And, like Caroline said, TSwift even joked about it! Haha.

I wish I could afford to take barre classes. I think it would be such a fun way to work out! Classes are just so expensive!

Congrats on the promotion... even if you did hear about it in an odd way - ha!

Just out of curiosity is the studio Magna? I've been thinking about trying it out for pilates or barre. If that isn't the place can you let me know the name of the studio? I've been wanting to do more barre workouts but have had a hard time finding class times that work for my schedule.

Well congratulations on your promotion! So funny that your boss forgot to tell you. I make up lyrics all the time as I'm terrible with them and same with quotes from movies. Have a great weekend!

On lyrics, that Maroon 5 song. I keep hearing "SUGAARR. USB!" Not "Yes Please." :)

Hahaha! I thought it was Starbucks lover too and I knew it was wrong but didn't look up the correct lyrics!
That's awesome about the new title - crazy how you found out though!

I ALWAYS make up lyrics to songs when I'm singing along! I rarely get them right. So funny!

Yay for taking your bike out this weekend! That will be fun. It's actually supposed to rain here all weekend which I'm not too bummed about as I really want to do some spring cleaning anyways so that will make it perfect for staying inside and cleaning. It's also been very dry and dusty here so we could use the rain.

As much as I hate the dark morning I must admit the bright evenings have been really really nice!

Happy FRIDAY! Whoo!

That Starbucks vs. ex-lover thing cracked me up. I love that you got it wrong and I also love that Phil called you out on it, requiring you both to closely analyze the song. hahaha.

And, all I can say is WTF (!!!!) to your boss "forgetting" to tell you and that sales rep saying he's glad you weren't fired. I don't care how many reports your boss has, that's downright irresponsible. If he can't be expected to tell you, then HR should. Co-workers should NOT find out before you. That's effed up. And, your industry bites if both you and that sales rep kind of shrug off the truth to his story. That's just not right. (Sorry, but true.)

So excited for all this warm weather! I've been running outside this week, which makes me happy!

That's awesome yah you got promoted to VP, but crazy they didn't tell you first or give you any extra perks!

Starbucks lover, haha! Awesome :-) Congratulations on your promotion!!! Even if it doesn't come with increased pay, etc., it's still super cool to be recognized for your good work!!!

Congratulations on your promotion :) Weird way to tell you... haha!
Also happy you get to see some spring weather where you live! :)

ha.. my friend thought it was star crossed lovers at first! also, doesn't the firing comment make you think, "did you hear something???" even when you know it could be a possibility because of the industry??? haha. i'd be all paranoid. my favorite part of the week was the sun and the time i spent with a coworker on friday trying to make our playground better for the kids.

I just went to my second barre class last week and its great! You're right about the constant tip toes being a killer though.

And congrats on the promotion :)

Congratulations on the promotion! And...not getting fired...what a weird conversation.

Becky said...

Haha you are not the only one that thought Starbucks lover - it's like the running joke about that song!

That is a crazy weird conversation about your promotion - congrats I guess?! (I'm so bewildered right now! LoL)

Yay for warmer weather and activity! We haven't had such arctic temperatures as you've had so I haven't minded the cold as much, but as I'm getting bigger it is nice to not have to peel off quite as many layers!

I thought Taylor Swift want about her Starbuck's lover too!!! In fact, it made sense in my head that maybe she had a crush on the barista or some "regular" at starbucks! So you aren't alone! Ha!!!

Omg, that is too funny about being named VP. Congratulations!!!

I am SO happy you're finally getting nice weather!!

Like everyone else I thought it was Starbucks lovers too. It was only when someone else posted something on facebook I realized it wasn't. It's actually so popular that at a recent award show Taylor Swift said the actual lyrics in her speech.

And congrats on the promotion! Although it's too bad it doesn't come with anything more than a title change.
