First "Normal" Weekend

This past weekend was our first "normal" weekend since early December. As much as I love the holidays, I am a person who craves routines so it felt good to get back to normal!

On Friday afternoon I had my post-op follow-up appointment. It was good to talk to my doctor about what they found. She didn't think I had polyps based on what she saw during the surgery but the lab reports showed that at least some of what she removed were polyps. They were benign as expected and she doesn't think they will come back. Fingers crossed that is the case!

On Friday night, we had take and bake pizzas which is a rare meal that everyone loves! Phil and I finished the last episode of "Fleishman is in Trouble." I had read and liked the book years ago. I liked the show more than Phil did. It was a bit too navel gazy for him.

Saturday was Phil's morning to sleep in. Will was awake at 5:15 but I left him in his crib until 6 (which is what our pediatrician has instructed us to do!) His 4th 2y molar broke through so I am guessing that is why he's been waking early lately. We FaceTimed with my parents after breakfast and then had our usual combo of the library followed by gymnastics.

Unfortunately Will took a short 1 hour nap that afternoon - which was the theme of the weekend. Since Phil slept in, I got naptime to myself. But Will was in such a HORRIFIC mood upon waking that I went down to help out. The moment I picked up Will, he went from screaming to snuggling into me. Phil was so annoyed since he had tried everything to calm him down. Toddlers! Once he was in a better mood and willing to sit down for a snack, I headed out for a 3 mile run. I wear my garmin but do not pay attention to the pace because it is slow going out there on these snow-packed and at times icy trails. But it was pretty and the temps were around 18F so pretty nice for Minnesota in January.

We had leftovers for dinner that night. I worked on a lego set with Paul - I'm loving the lego set stage! After Paul went to bed, we watched the first half of Glass Onion while I worked on a puzzle I got for Christmas.

It was my turn to sleep in on Sunday but I was up around 6:45 as I felt pretty rested - which is a wonderful but rare feeling! The boys and I had a play date with a running club friend, Taya, and her kids at an indoor playground called Inner Active. Her kids are 18 months and 3.5 years, so pretty close in age to mine. Taya has taken an interest in photography so she got some great pics of my kids - plus one of me with the boys! I'm not wearing make-up and haven't showered, but I don't really care because that is how I look 85% of the time (I only wear make-up when I go into the office!). The indoor playground was AMAZING! I wish it was closer as it's the kind of place we'd go to often in the winter! It's 30 minutes away from us, so not close. We were there for 2 hours and could have stayed longer but I didn't want to risk Will falling asleep on the drive home.

I worked out during nap/quiet time - I'm on week 4 of the LIIFT4 beach body program which I am really liking. At most, I do 2 strength training workouts/week so it's taking me a long time to get through the program but oh well. Will took another 1 hour nap so he woke up right after I finished my workout. Womp womp. But at least he was in a better mood. He was happy to sit on the couch and eat popcorn while we watched the rest of the Vikings game. They won our division so play at home next week! Woo hoo!

After the game, we headed to the sledding hill that is 1.5 blocks from our house. Will initially liked sledding when he tried it a few weeks ago but his interest has waned. So I pulled him around in his sled while Phil and Paul enjoyed the sledding hill.

Waving to a snowman on our street. He calls him Frosty!

For dinner, I made picadillo in the instant pot which I served with rice and black beans. Will, Phil and I loved it; Paul wouldn't eat any of it, even though we KNOW he eats beans at school. Le sigh.

After the boys were in bed, Phil watched the Packers/Lions game and I worked on my puzzle before heading up to bed to read my book (Solito - a sobering memoir about a 9 year old El Salvadorian boy that crosses the border to join his parents in the US).

And that was a wrap! Overall, it was a really good weekend. One thing that kind of annoyed me was how Paul would say "now what are we going to do?" when we got done with each fun activity. Like I'm just a 24/7 entertainer/purveyor of fun experiences! I know it's unrealistic for me to expect a 4.5 year old to think - 'gosh, I am so lucky that my parents do so many fun things with us!' But I hope he gets to that point when he has more maturity and the ability to reflect on his childhood. :) All that said, weekends ARE more enjoyable when we are out doing things. I'm just looking forward to a time when my kids are able to recognize how lucky they are that they get to do cool, fun things.

How was your weekend?

Our weekend was pretty quiet. LOL. We have the opposite weekends, I think. I went to the Farmers' Market on Saturday morning, we did laundry and house chores on Sunday morning and went to visit a friend on Sunday afternoon. Nothing too strenuous!

That indoor playground looks like a lot of fun!

I can absolutely relate to the resentment of your kids not appreciating all the effort it takes to plan fun things, not to mention pay for and execute many of them! Sometimes I feel like a cruise director and when my 8 yo says "oh that's it?" when I tell her our agenda for a weekend day I just want to throw in the towel sometimes! You're doing an amazing job and plan so many fun things for your family! It's hard to not take those comments personally--i get it!

What a fantastic picture of you and the boys! So nice to have those rare photos with yourself in the picture. :-) Your snowy run picture is great too. It looks so beautiful outside -- sunshine and lots of snow is my favorite weather combination.

That feeling of being the entertainer (or food source or instructor or whatever) drives me nuts. My kid was supposed to practice her guitar at 3:00 -- a time she chose -- and she was in her room with a clock that she can read and with her guitar... and I went up at four and said, "Did you practice yet?" and she said, "No, no one told me too!" OMG.

I keep telling myself that this is part of the parenting role, shepherding the kids through all this stuff they need and gradually teaching them to do it all themselves. But it is pretty thankless sometimes!

I know what you mean- I LOVE the holidays but it's nice to get back to a normal schedule 9not that we're there quite yet- we have a trip to Tampa coming up this week.)
Sounds like it was a pretty great weekend. Yes, you do a lot of fun things with your kids. Someday they'll look back on their childhoods and appreciate it. Just recently my daughter said "I'm so grateful we have such nice Christmases." Oh, really??? That was nice to hear. When they get older they'll compare their experiences to others and realize what a great childhood they had.

I'm glad to hear the results from the surgery were positive!

Your Will story reminds me of when my youngest was a (fairly difficult, colicky) baby. I went out, and when I got home after 45 minutes at the mall or something, I could see my husband in the window with him in the baby Bjorn. I opened the garage door (it's detached) and I could hear him SCREAMING. I went in the house and said J, Mama's home and he immediately stopped crying. Apparently he was hysterical the whole time I was gone and my husband tried to feed him, change him, rock him, give him a soother, etc. Sometimes they just need Mom!

Oh, the teething…THAT I do not miss, and is likely part of the reason he would only take 1 hour naps. Poor kid.

It sounds like you had a great weekend. My daughter has always been a bit of a homebody, so she was OK with going out and doing things, but was always happy to come home and take it easy. Sometimes I was thankful for that, and sometimes I would have liked to do more.

you are so much than me in term taking the kiddos out for activities. when my girls were that age, I think I'd do one thing per day max, maybe a short trip to the playground. I also need a rest during weekend after a week of work. hahaha.... but I do admit that this age is short... so it will all be fine. now we are at the age that they need more sophisticated activities so it's even harder for me to want to organize it. we usually do sports on weekend, eat out, a lot of free reading time, and maybe a playdate. low key is how I like my weekends.
this is the first time after a long trip that I don't feel missing the routine. I could stay in Bali for another week easily :) hahah

This sounds like such a lovely weekend!! Love the sleeping in/nap trade offs.Ben does all of our nighttime stuff (hanging out with the older kids if I happen to fall asleep on the couch, making sure the dog goes out, unloading the dishwasher from dinner and cleaning up the teens' snack, closing up the house etc etc etc) and I get up and do breakfast everyday. That way he can wake up slowly, and I can check out early. Trade offs are clutch LOL

Hurray for the return of normality! It is raining here so it does kind of make you want to just hunker down and do things around the house, but I always feel more productive if I do something first! You guys are brave for getting out in the cold at all, but definitely with the kids in tow!

For me this weekend was still "holiday mode" as we had our big family Christmas party (we do a small one with the immediate family on the actual day and then one with everyone the weekend after the new year) on Saturday, which was fun, but did mean I was out of the house all day that day. On Sunday I went for an annual run with some friends but due to the rain the parks are closed from flooding and downed trees, so we shortened the run and went for breakfast! Then I spent the rest of the day reading my grandma's journals, which was entertaining. There is a letter from my mom to her when she found out she was pregnant with my brother which I couldn't help but call him and share with him!

I, too, enjoy the return to normalcy when the holidays are over! December is a super fun time of year, but there's something nice about things being back to our usual routines.

I truly do think your kids will look back on their childhood and realize what a beautiful life you gave them! My brother and I tell my mom all the time how much we appreciated everything she did for us (and my brother has even apologized for being so difficult as a teenager! It helps that he now has a teen, so he's seeing how rough it can be as a parent!) It will happen!

Yup. You are the entertainment director. The key words? "Now, you are going to find a book or two and I am going to ___." Yeah, that always works! (Not!)

I love how you two trade sleep-in mornings, even if they get a bit overtaken now and then. I'd say your return to the normal life sounds like it kicked off on a very good note! And sending good wishes for your test results.

Your "normal" weekend sounds so busy, haha, but I know that it works best for you if you have activities planned with the boys. Paul's comment cracked me up, although I TOTALLY understand that it was not funny to you when you're trying to keep them entertained and he's obviously not "appreciating" that in a way that you'd like (well, as you said, he's 4.5 after all, but I am sure when he is older, he will look back and really see how much you did with him!).
